Hyundai Elantra Coupe Review: Performance and Comfort Insights

Hyundai took their Elantra and chopped off two doors to give us the Elantra Coupe with sportier looks. Surprisingly, it didn’t lose the space inside. However, the power did not increase, and you still get the same engine choices from the four-door sibling:
- 1.6L Engine: 121 HP and 152 Nm of torque
- 1.8L Engine: 143 HP and 186 Nm of torque
The Elantra Coupe provides good options for buyers seeking a fully equipped car with numerous gadgets for comfort. However, the car’s ride is uncomfortable.
Drive
The drive in the Elantra Coupe is not very comfortable. You can feel all the bumps and humps on the road due to the sports suspension. This setup does not significantly enhance handling, which remains similar to a sedan.
Performance Specs
Engine choices include:
- 1.6L Engine: 121 HP, 152 Nm of torque, 0-100 km/h in 11.8 seconds
- 1.8L Engine: 143 HP, 186 Nm of torque, 0-100 km/h in 10.4 seconds
While not the fastest coupe, this is advantageous considering the basic model comes with only one airbag, while the fully-optioned model includes two. You don’t want to be traveling at high speeds with such safety features.
When driving at high speeds, the ride remains smooth without shaking, although you may notice some wind and wheel noise. However, turning up the radio can help drown out the noise.
Pros of Driving the Elantra Coupe
- Good fuel economy
- Easy parking
- Reliable braking with four disc brakes
Interior

Upon entering the Elantra Coupe, you will notice the broad doors that provide easy access to both the front and back seats. The seats are comfortable and adjustable to suit the driver’s height. The seat belts feature a mechanism for easy extension, adding to the convenience.
Interior Features
- Foldable side mirrors for tight parking
- Spacious front and back seating
- Good sound system with easy-to-use stereo and AUX/USB ports
- Stereo controls on the steering wheel for safer driving
However, long doors may make exiting the vehicle somewhat challenging. Back seat passengers may complain about the heat due to the absence of A/C vents, especially in the UAE's summer heat.
If the back seat passengers get too noisy, the excellent sound system can keep them entertained. The fully-equipped model comes with features like a start button, parking sensors, and a reverse camera that displays on the rearview mirror to simplify parking.
The trunk offers spacious storage compared to other coupes, and the foldable back seats allow for additional cargo space.
Comparison with Competitors
Toyota’s Zelas is one of the main competitors of the Elantra Coupe. It is also a two-door coupe with a more powerful 2.5L engine producing 176 HP. Unlike the Elantra, the Zelas provides easier access to its interior.
In terms of pricing, the Elantra starts at 60,000, making it one of the cheapest coupes in the market. In contrast, the Zelas is priced around 90,000, providing the Elantra with firm competition. While the Elantra’s aesthetics may appeal to some, the choice between the two ultimately depends on personal preference.
Verdict
Overall, the Hyundai Elantra Coupe is a decent car that offers good value for its price. It is practical for users looking for an attractive coupe with ample space, a good sound system, and a variety of convenient gadgets. However, the ride comfort could use improvement, and it lacks significant power.
