Hyundai Motor Unveils Solar-Powered Electric Charging System
Tags:
Overview of the Technology
Hyundai Motor has announced its plan to introduce a solar-powered electric charging system applicable to specific models within the Hyundai lineup. These solar panels will be installed on the vehicle's roof and hood to offset consumption in hybrid and electric vehicles, aiming to provide additional energy and enhance fuel efficiency while increasing the distance covered per charge.
Goals of the Technology
This technology is being developed to support the primary energy source of the vehicle and increase the kilometers it can travel while simultaneously reducing its carbon footprint. It can charge the batteries of both electric and hybrid vehicles, as well as fuel engines, significantly improving fuel efficiency.
Solar Charging Systems
Hyundai’s group is developing three types of solar energy charging systems:
- Silicon Solar Roof System
- Transparent Solar Roof System
- Lightweight Solar Hood System, which covers the entire vehicle body
System One: Silicon Solar Roof
The first type, applied to hybrid vehicles, consists of solar panels made of silicon mounted on the roof of the car. It can enhance the vehicle's capabilities, charging from 30% to 60% of the battery daily, depending on the surrounding weather conditions.
System Two: Energy Transfer Solar Roof
The second system will support fuel vehicles for the first time in the world, equipped with energy transfer panels. This technology provides the driver with a sense of spaciousness and can be installed in panoramic sunroof openings.
System Three: Solar Panels on the Hood
The third system will be designated for eco-friendly vehicles and is still under study; it aims to maximize the amount of energy generated by installing solar panels on both the hood and the roof of the car.
How the System Works
The solar charging system consists of photovoltaic panels, a control unit, and a battery that charges when the solar panel converts light into electrical energy.
Future Applications
Hyundai plans to implement the first system of this technology by the end of 2019 to help find ways to enhance compliance with international standards and regulations aimed at improving fuel efficiency in vehicles and reducing their carbon footprint.
