Introduction
The police in the United Arab Emirates have claimed that the use of mobile devices is the primary cause of distraction among drivers in the country. In response, law enforcement has implemented strict measures against drivers who use their mobile phones while driving. In a statement shared on social media, the Abu Dhabi police warned drivers to refrain from mobile phone usage while on the road for their safety and the safety of others.
Penalties for Mobile Phone Usage While Driving
The police stated that those caught using their mobile phones while driving will face a fine of 800 AED along with four black points on their driving record. The authorities are particularly focused on discouraging mobile gaming during traffic jams.
Survey Results
According to an online survey conducted by the Ministry of Interior, mobile phone usage was identified as the leading cause of driver distraction, contributing to serious accidents. The survey revealed that:
- 71.4% of participants identified mobile phones as the main source of distraction on the road.
- 17.7% attributed distractions to children.
- 10.9% indicated that eating and drinking while driving was a significant cause of distraction.
Mobile Phone Usage Statistics
In 2018 alone, traffic authorities recorded 88,619 instances of mobile phone usage throughout the UAE, averaging 243 violations per day.
