2017 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400 Review
Introduction
The Infiniti Q50 was introduced in 2013 and replaced the renowned G37 Sedan. Since its debut, Infiniti has proven, time and again, that the Q50 is a phenomenal and uncompromising luxury sports sedan.
The Q50 Red Sport 400, as the name suggests, is the beefier, sportier version of the already impressive standard car. This year, those who live for speed are in for a treat – the Q50 Red Sport 400 welcomes an all-new VR-series engine that shares a fair bit with the infamous GT-R.

Exterior
The exterior of the Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400 2017 is stunning, to say the least. Having retained the aggressiveness of the previous model, it features an identical set of taut headlamps, 19” wheels, and prominent contours along the car – an aesthetic treat!

Interior
The interior of the 2017 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400 is home to several standard features such as a Bose stereo system, heated seats, a heated steering wheel, and two large touchscreens integrated within the center console.
While the display on top shares information pertaining to the navigation system, the one that sits below it controls other aspects such as the climate control, radio, and Bluetooth telephony. Although unique, the cabin is unlikely to appeal to all, as the lack of consistency in the screen bezel and buttons emit an almost retrofitted feel. Add to that, ambiguity with button controls, and though luxurious, the cabin is far from perfect.
Safety & Features
The Infiniti Q50 is undoubtedly a very safe car. It is equipped with seven airbags, including side, head, and rear head airbags. Standard features include electronic stability control, rollover protection system, traction control, and ABS. The 4-wheel disc brakes make halting the car a breeze. It also comes with a blind spot monitoring and lane-departure monitoring system, which is becoming increasingly common every year. The auto-leveling headlights are particularly useful when driving over speed bumps.

Driving Experience
Powered by a VR-Series engine that features 85% new parts and direct injection (something even the GT-R lacks), the 2017 Infiniti Q50S delivers 400 horsepower and 475 Nm of torque – impressive figures for a 3.0-liter Twin-Turbo V6.
The 7-speed automatic transmission works as the messenger, transmitting the ferocious power to the wheels. With the turbos mounted to the cylinder heads, there’s negligible turbo lag and a whole lot of head-pinning acceleration to accompany.
Utilizing an all-new electric steering rack, the Japanese sedan bids farewell to the traditional mechanical connection between the steering and the wheels up front. With a powerful motor transmitting signals from the steering to the wheels, it’s akin to a PlayStation game, something the millennials would know all about.
The benefits of the electric steering rack are evident from the get-go. Identical amounts of steering effort deliver varying responses depending on the mode selected. While the Standard mode offers a smoother turn, Sports+ increases response for a twitchier and more dynamic feel.
With 400 horsepower at the disposal of your right foot, leaving stability control engaged is advisable. When taking a sharp corner, the electric aids on-board sense a skid before it occurs and counter-steer without any physical correction to the steering wheel – impressive wizardry!
In turn, a spirited drive is made even more exciting with initial turn-in being completed by the computers to make one feel nothing short of a driving legend. Coupled with the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine, the Q50 Red Sport 400 delivers an exhilarating and highly enjoyable experience behind the wheel, one that undoubtedly lives up to its G37 predecessor.
Verdict
Assessing the Q50 Red Sport 400 logically reveals several flaws such as its unjustified price tag, confused positioning, and subpar materials. However, give in to its emotional appeal, and there’s an inexplicable je ne sais quoi that makes it so very desirable. Balancing luxury and sportiness, it’s worthy of all the praise it receives.
