Infiniti QX80 2016 Review

The Infiniti QX80 2016 is everything it is hyped to be and more. In the simplest of words, it is truly magnificent.

Infiniti QX80 Front

The Infiniti QX80 has been a part of the Japanese automaker’s line-up since 2004 and rivals the likes of the Cadillac Escalade and the Lexus LX570. Currently in its second-generation of production, the QX80 benefits from the underpinnings of the Nissan Patrol and assumes flagship position in the manufacturer’s line-up.

Key Features:
Engine 5.6L / V8
Transmission 7-Speed Automatic
Power 400hp / 560NM
Top Speed 215 km/h
Price AED 328,000

Exterior

Measuring 5,290mm long and 2,030mm wide, the Infiniti QX80 2016 is a sizeable offering and one that is 125mm longer and 35mm taller than the vehicle that it is based on. With a vast canvas to work on, the designers have created nothing short of a masterpiece.

Its wide, intimidating stance, complements the soft contours that embellish the bodywork and results in a truly spectacular design. Although the silhouette of the Infiniti QX80 bears great resemblance to that of the Nissan Patrol, subtle aesthetic alterations work to differentiate the two.

Interior

The cabin, which welcomes an abundance of plush leather and wood trim, could well be considered the epitome of luxury and refinement in its segment. Tasteful dashes of chrome, are an elegant addition and help connote the model’s luxurious standing.

The 3,075mm wheelbase, translates to a capacious cabin that offers 1,005mm, 1,040mm, and 730mm of legroom for the first, second, and third row of occupants respectively. With the second and third-row of seats stowed away, the QX80 offers a whopping 2,693 liters of cargo space behind the first row.

Safety & Technology

Composed of ultra-high tensile steel, the Infiniti QX80 2016 is not only stronger (1,350 MPa as opposed to 590 MPa from conventional steel), but also lighter than its aforementioned rivals. Safety features include, but are not limited to, Backup Collision Intervention, an Around View Monitor, and Lane Departure Prevention.

Populating the feature list of the QX80, are a number of fascinating technologies such as a Tri-Zone Entertainment System, Intelligent Cruise Control, and an absolutely phenomenal 15-speaker Bose surround sound audio system that delivers a rich and realistic sound. To cater for varying tastes and preferences, the Tri-Zone Entertainment System allows for those travelling in the rear seats to indulge in audio / media through wireless headphones and on independent multimedia screens – no more winging children, then?

Drive

Residing under the brawny hood of the QX80 is a hefty 5.6-liter V8 engine that kicks out 400 horsepower at 5,800 RPM and 560 Nm of torque at 4,000 RPM. Mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission, the Infiniti’s power figures trump those of the Lexus LX570 significantly, but are no match for the Cadillac Escalade 6.2-liter’s output of 420 horsepower and 624 Nm of torque.

Infiniti QX80 Front - 3

Within the city, the QX80 delivers power instantaneously and in a very linear fashion. Maintaining poise at all times, it offers a supple ride that absorbs imperfections in the road while hitting the 100 km/h mark in 7.3 seconds and bearing a top speed of 215 km/h.

Off the beaten path, the gargantuan Infiniti fares reasonably well, keeping in mind a ground clearance of just 235mm and the lack of a rear differential. Although the QX80 isn’t equipped with the Nissan Patrol’s off-road wizardry (Terrain Management System), the 4WD High and 4WD Low gearing do a splendid job of hauling the 2,729kg SUV effortlessly over obstacles.

Verdict

A couple of years ago, a distinct billboard that promoted the Infiniti QX80 stood alongside a major highway in the city and read something along the lines of “Some travel First Class every day”. While it sounded like a load of marketing fluff back then, it’s no mystery why the Japanese manufacturer chose to market its flagship model that way. Not only is the QX80 far, far superior to its rivals, but it’s a truly impressive offering on the whole. Hats off Infiniti; well done indeed!

Infiniti QX80 Rear

Pros:

Extremely impressive on all counts.

Well worth its price.

The epitome of luxury in its segment.

Cons:

Steering is misleadingly light for an SUV of such dimensions.

Terrible quality of the infotainment screen diminishes the overall experience within the cabin.

Noisy rear A/C vents emit more sound than air.
