1979 – Mercedes S-Class
The name S-Class was devised in 1972 and in 1979 came, the first update to the automobile. The 1979 model fascinated the world with its emphasis on weight reduction. It even used an all-new light weight V8 engine. This was the first car in the brand’s fleet to ditch the chrome bumpers and instead used special plastic bumpers to bear the dents. Moreover, the basic necessity of today – the airbag – also debuted in this S-Class in 1981.

1991 – Mercedes S-Class
The 1991 Mercedes-Benz S-Class focused primarily on one aspect – comfort. After all, the brand survives on providing consumers with ultimate luxury. In addition to that, this S-Class also pioneered the safety technology we all are familiar with today – the Electronic Stability Program (ESP). This feature was standard from 1995 onwards. Lastly, the Brake Assist feature was also presented to the world in the 1996 model.

1998 – Mercedes S-Class
This S-Class model is a very important update in the car’s history. It is because this particular model series introduced a couple of trademark features that are still being used in Mercedes-Benz models. The 1998 Mercedes S-Class introduced controllable air suspension for drive modes (called AIRMATIC), the central control (called COMAND) for infotainment, adaptive cruise control (called DISTRONIC) and the PRE-SAFE system which basically is a bunch of functions that enable protection of passengers when a collision occurs. Moreover, this S-Class also introduced all-wheel-drive system (called 4MATIC) as well.

2005 – Mercedes S-Class
The 2005 Mercedes S-Class incorporated revolutionary features such as Night Vision (called Active Night View Assist), DISTRONIC PLUS – an upgrade to the DISTRONIC system – and Brake Assist Plus. Moreover, this update of the S-Class introduced features like Blind Spot Assist, Lane Keeping Assist and Speed Limit Assist. In 2009, the S400 Hybrid was launched and was the first production car to use lithium-ion battery.
