Hurrah! New Generation Mazda MX-5 to feature larger engine, manual gearbox
Tags:
Mazda has officially confirmed that the next generation of its iconic MX-5 Miata will come with a new, larger 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine. Despite the larger engine, the very popular manual transmission will still be an option. Yippee!
Engine Upgrade: Welcome to Skyactiv-Z
The new Miata will be equipped with Mazda's new Skyactiv-Z engine, a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that will deliver robust performance while keeping fuel efficiency in mind.
The engine will be different from the existing 1.5 and 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engines, which will enable a balance between power and the environment. Mazda's Chief Technical Officer Ryuichi Umeshita stated the new engine will deliver "very good" power and fuel efficiency, the brand's emphasis on driving pleasure and sustainability.
Compliance with Lightweight Design
Consistent with the lightweight construction tradition of the MX-5, Mazda is looking to maintain the curb weight of the car at less than 1,000 kilograms (around 2,205 pounds). Masashi Nakayama, General Manager of Mazda Design Division, declared the objective of a lighter car without sacrificing structural integrity or performance.
Maintaining the Manual Transmission
In the midst of an industry shift towards automatic transmissions and electrification, Mazda's refusal to give up the manual transmission in the next-generation Miata demonstrates its commitment to driving enthusiasts. The preservation of the manual transmission fits with the Miata's tradition of providing clean, unspoiled connection between driver and road.
Electrification Problems
While Mazda is exploring the electrification potential across its lineup, the automaker knows that a full-electric Miata would be difficult, particularly in terms of weight. The weight of battery packs would potentially alter the handling character of the car, a core aspect of the Miata's identity. Because of this, Mazda is considering very carefully how to add electrification without compromising the model's core integrity.
Scheduled Release
The new-generation MX-5 Miata is said to go on sale in 2026
