Nissan is showcasing a new material at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) aimed at reducing noise within vehicle cabins and enhancing energy efficiency.
New Sound Insulation Material
This week, Nissan will present its new lightweight sound insulation material, known for its exceptional acoustic properties, at the ongoing CES in Las Vegas.
Features of the New Material
The new material is composed of simple elements featuring an interconnected structure and a plastic membrane that control air vibrations to minimize the transfer of broad frequency bands (500-1200 Hz), such as engine and road noise.
Currently, most materials used for insulating this frequency range consist of heavy rubber sheets. In contrast, Nissan's new acoustic material weighs only a quarter of conventional materials while providing the same level of sound insulation.
Production Costs and Benefits
The production cost of the new material is comparable to existing materials, and even more advantageous due to its simple structure. Consequently, this material can be used in vehicles where sound insulation materials are currently limited due to cost or weight considerations.
Research and Development History
Nissan began its research into exceptional materials technology in 2008, initially using it in highly sensitive antennas for electromagnetic wave research. The company has since expanded the application of this technology to include sound waves, leading to the successful innovation of the new material.
