Essential Factors to Consider When Buying a Used Car
If you have the money, there is no reason why you shouldn’t buy a brand new car. They are less likely to give you a headache, and you’d have no worries about the car breaking down soon. Unfortunately, this may not always be the case for all people. For some, the only option is to buy a used car. If you want to get your money’s worth when getting a used car, here are some factors to consider.
1. Check the Exterior
A nice exterior usually indicates the car’s health. People who maintain the freshness of their car’s interiors tend to take care of the car as a whole. Check for:
- Fading
- Scratches
- Dents
Waviness on the car’s surface is a sign of new paintwork, which might indicate that the car has been in an accident.
2. Inspect for Rust
Check all areas prone to corrosion, especially if the car is more than five years old. The UAE is known for extreme conditions that exacerbate existing rust. Focus on:
- Side sills
- Front wings (both rear and top)
- Doors’ bottoms
- Rear and front bumpers
If you hear a cracking noise when you gently press a metal panel, it’s a sign of advanced corrosion.

3. Analyze the Mileage
Mileage is one of the first things you ask when buying a used car. The number of kilometers indicates the vehicle's age. Aim for cars with:
- 30,000 kilometers or below per year of age
However, a 10-year-old car with low mileage may not necessarily be a good investment. Cars age even when not in use, so check for regular maintenance and servicing if possible.
4. Examine the Engine
A dirty engine bay suggests neglect, while an overly clean engine may indicate attempts to hide problems. The engine should be in between these extremes. Check:
- The oil’s color
- The quantity of the coolant
Start the engine and rev it, noting any irregular noises during ignition and revving. The engine should operate smoothly with no significant hiccups.
5. Review the Car's History
Checking the car’s history is crucial, especially for imported vehicles. If the owner or dealer has service records, review them thoroughly. For cars from the US, locate the VIN number, usually printed on the dashboard. You can conduct an online VIN check to see if the vehicle has been involved in an accident.
6. Consider GCC Specifications
As much as possible, choose cars with GCC specifications. These vehicles are designed to withstand the harsh environment and extreme climates of the UAE, reducing potential headaches in the long run. Imported cars may lack essential features like the right radiator, air conditioning unit, or filtration system suited for UAE driving conditions, increasing the risk of breakdowns.
