Besides manufacturing reliable cars, Toyota’s rich history also exhibits victories in the World Rally Championship (WRC). Under its Gazoo Racing arm, it has set and broken several records in this tournament where the determination and skill of the driver coalesce with tough and powerful cars.
RACE RESULTS
At the 2024 FIA World Rally Championship’s first Rally Latvia, it secured its second back-to-back one-two triumph. Navigating the No. 69 GR Yaris Rally1 Hybrid Electric Vehicle, were stalwarts at the helm, Kalle Rovanperä and co-driver Jonne Halttunen who aced the race to finish in 2 hours, 31 minutes and 47.6 seconds.
Soon after, Sébastien Ogier and his peer, Vincent Landais registered victory by coming second and clocking the time of 2 hours, 32 minutes and 26.8 seconds. They were scything and manoeuvring the asphalt in a No. 17 GR Yaris Rally 1 Hybrid Electric Vehicle. The event is extremely significant as it is the pioneering attempt for Latvia in this adrenaline-boosting racing event that requires one to be steadfast and vigilant at all times, to battle gruff terrain and slaloms along the way. The tournament was organized in Latvia’s neighbouring country, Estonia, where many such races have been held in neoteric times.
In an identical fashion to Rally Liepāja, the drivers had to contend with serious gravel-laden tarmac where high velocity could result in an imbroglio, for even a slight misjudgement. What could make the drivers befuddled, is that for most, it was their first attempt at the venue.
RALLY PROGRESS
From the onset, Rovanperä and Halttunen took the lead in the race which commenced from the night-time opening dais. As they progressed, they defeated all their opponents in 11 levels, demolished their top-speed record for the 200th time and underscored their 50th beginning at the apex of the WRC, courtesy of their 14th win.
For Ogier and Landais, it was the revival of solid gameplay as they returned to the thrilling racing championship after a hiatus of three years. Prior to this, he had become the foremost new kid on the block in Latvia, where he registered third place, just before overtaking his contemporary to secure second place and clinch a double-podium epilogue.
FUTURE RALLY EVENTS
Following the smashing conclusion of the above racing events, the ninth round of the 2024 FIA WRC, christened Rally Finland will be held from August 1, 2024 to August 4, 2024. This is being purportedly remarked as the fastest rally as it features suave roads and breathtaking jumps in its wake. However, this is equivalent to home ground for Toyota Gazoo Racing as its headquarters is near the service park in Jyväskylä.
CONCLUSION
Toyota has carved a favourable image for itself in Racing, through its bronchi – Toyota Racing Development and Toyota Gazoo Racing. Establishing these divisions, it successfully demonstrated the progress from building utilitarian vehicles for the Japanese army, to building some of the finest rally contraptions. This, in turn, helped them learn more about motoring, which they have used to provide better and more suitable mobility solutions to people. This also harks back to their perception that ‘roads build the people, and people build the cars.’
Toyota is likely to get stimulated by lessons learnt in rally and other forms of racing to synergize ground-breaking technologies with efficient and robust powerplants to provide mesmerizing experiences to its potential buyers when they venture on excursions.
