Introduction
As part of an initiative to organize parking spaces across the city and reduce parking violations, Abu Dhabi will implement paid parking starting August 18. The Department of Transport in Abu Dhabi has urged all drivers and car owners to obtain resident parking permits before this date to avoid significant fines and penalties.
History of Parking Regulations
This process began in 2009 in the busiest areas of the UAE capital and has since become well-known to residents. The turquoise and black parking spaces indicate regular parking at a rate of 2 AED per hour, while the turquoise and white spaces denote premium parking at a rate of 3 AED per hour. Over the years, the Ministry of Transport has also established paid parking within residential neighborhoods to alleviate the shortage of parking spaces.
Changes Starting August
Beginning August 18, drivers will be required to pay for parking in areas such as Al Murjan and Al Bateen, which were previously free. Residents living in these areas must obtain residential permits unless they choose to pay hourly parking fees. Additionally, individuals without resident parking permits will not be able to park in designated residential areas between 9 PM and 8 AM.
Cost of Permits
The annual cost for resident parking permits for expatriates is 800 AED for the first permit and 1200 AED for the second permit. Permits can also be purchased twice a year, with the fee for the first vehicle being 400 AED and 600 AED for the second vehicle.
