Recently, Porsche had announced that the new Boxster will embrace the new 718 badge. The other changes apart from the name include the all-new turbocharged engines replacing the 3.0 liter flat-six engines used earlier. The goal is to improve fuel efficiency and power without increasing the engine size.
However, we did not know what will be the final output from the new engine options. So, Porsche has now revealed the figures. There will be two new engines powering the Boxster and Boxster S respectively. The Boxster will be powered by a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder turbocharged boxer engine producing 300 BHP and 380 Nm of torque. The Boxster S will have a more powerful 2.5 liter 4 cylinder turbocharged boxer engine 350 BHP and 420 Nm of torque. In other words, both the models now produce 35 BHP more than their predecessor. Also, the Boxster produces 100 Nm more than before while the Boxster S produces 60 Nm extra. This is a pretty big deal considering the engine size.
The fuel efficiency figures are not available as of now but Porsche states that the efficiency has increased by 14 percent. This improvement is partly because of the new PDK transmission that incorporates virtual gearing. Basically, two gears are selected at once and clutch is slipped between them to introduce new gear ratios.
The new engines also have improved the performance figures. The new Boxster and Boxster S propel from 0-60 mph in 4.5 and 4.0 seconds respectively. This is 0.7 and 0.5 seconds faster than the previous models. But, these are not the only changes in the new 718. The exterior changes include new front end with redesigned LED lights and larger air intakes. The interior changes include new dash and updated infotainment system. Both models will go on sale mid of this year with starting prices around $57,000 USD for Boxster and $70,000 for Boxster S.
