Abu Dhabi's Road Safety Initiatives: Addressing Over 6000 Traffic Issues

Overview of Traffic Issues in Abu Dhabi
According to a survey conducted by the Abu Dhabi Municipality, more than 6,000 traffic issues have been identified in high-risk areas and corridors. Majed Al Kathiri, head of the traffic services section and road safety at Abu Dhabi Municipality, stated the urgent need for intervention.
Road Safety Action Plan (2011-2015)
"We need to intervene urgently to treat the most dangerous sites," Mr. Al Kathiri mentioned, adding that a budget of Dh300 million has been allocated for road safety improvements during this period.
Planned Improvements
The following plans are being implemented as part of Abu Dhabi's road safety initiative:
- Increased number of speed bumps
- Enhanced guardrails
- Larger zebra crossings and drop kerbs
- New fences along main and arterial routes
- Visual cues to improve speed control
- Establishment of safety zones outside 240 schools
- And more initiatives aimed at enhancing road safety
Global Context: Decade of Action on Road Safety
The above-mentioned plans are part of Abu Dhabi's response to the Decade of Action on Road Safety, a global policy movement initiated by the UN, which commenced in May 2011.
