2013 Audi A4 Review - Performance and Modern Design

2013 Audi A4 - Side View

The new Audi A4 model can either be a significant event in the automotive world or a subtle update, depending on your perspective. While other automakers often design cars that render their previous models obsolete, Audi prefers to make subtle changes. Therefore, if you glance at an A4 from six or seven years ago, it still appears fresh and modern.

Although the new Audi A4 features an attractive look, it may not astonish you as much as BMW's Chris Bangle design did years ago. However, upon closer inspection, we will notice significant updates. The headlights have been slightly narrowed to create a more aggressive appearance, while the front end has been lowered thanks to a slimmer grille. All these updates convey a message that says, "I mean business."

And so do we! Therefore, I took my wife, my twin children, and my parents for a driving experience to Dibba. I tested the 2.0 TFSI version, which features Audi's 2.0-liter DOHC 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, delivering 155 kW of power and 350 Nm of torque. These figures set our expectations for fiery performance.

Performance

The stopwatch confirmed that the Audi A4 is undeniably fast. According to Audi, this car can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds, with a top speed of 245 km/h. However, the A4 may not give you that exhilarating feeling of speed, which is a plus for passengers but may disappoint speed enthusiasts. This could be due to the interaction between the seven-speed hydraulic transmission and the Quattro all-wheel-drive system. Fuel consumption is reasonable for a car with this performance, but those seeking greater efficiency may opt for one of the diesel models.

Thus, while it is a high-performance vehicle, the TFSI version isn't the ideal choice for winning traffic light races. The Audi A4 is a smooth, quiet mid-size sedan that excels on long journeys. Its power and torque are commendable, providing the necessary strength at all levels. The acceleration feels refreshing, and it is the smoothest we experienced in this category.

Comfort and Practicality

This model comes with sporty seats that not only look good but also provide excellent side support. The adjustable seating positions for both the driver and front passenger allow you to find the perfect fit, and the steering wheel can be adjusted in multiple ways.

However, it seems the Germans prefer to sit on firm surfaces, and the Audi A4 does not deviate from this tradition. The seats are comfortable enough for short to medium journeys, but the trip to Dibba caused some discomfort for the elderly.

Rear space isn’t a strong point here. The seat contours make this a four-seater vehicle, and legroom is limited. The A4 is less spacious than the BMW 3 Series, which is considered its main competitor.

This is also true for the trunk. Not only is it approximately 480 liters in size, but its shape also makes loading a lot of gear a challenge. For instance, we could only fit a double stroller by folding down one of the rear seats.

Summary

Overall, we loved the 2013 Audi A4. It boasts vitality and quality, and the power it delivers is enjoyable and bold. The main issue is that it falls somewhere between the two extremes. It will be compared to both compact sedans and mid-size sedans. In its price range, the BMW 3 Series offers competitive driving dynamics and space. Meanwhile, mid-range competitors like the Ford Mondeo provide significantly more space both in the cabin and in the trunk.

The price of the Audi A4 starts at approximately AED 160,000, which is about the same equivalent in Saudi Arabia and close to the price of the BMW 3 Series.

The Audi A4 is ideal for young couples and small families. While Audi's design may not offer immediacy, VAG's reputation for reliability works in its favor, and the Quattro system provides top-notch handling.

It's a good car, but to stand out in this segment, it needs to offer more.
