2017 Ford Escape Review: Design and Performance Highlights

Discover the 2017 Ford Escape's features, design, and driving experience.

Introduction

As the demand for compact SUVs continues to rise, manufacturers are enhancing their offerings to remain competitive in the market. Today, we're reviewing the 2017 Ford Escape, which faces tough competition from models like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, and Kia Sportage. Let's delve into the new features of this vehicle.

Exterior Design

Ford has given the Escape some design cues from its larger sibling, the Ford Edge, particularly noticeable in the front grille. The version we have today includes daytime running lights, fog lamps, and new LED lights that enhance its aesthetic appeal, complemented by 17-inch alloy wheels.

Interior Design

The designers aimed to create a distinctive atmosphere with various design options that maximize passenger space. For example, a traditional handbrake has been replaced with an electric parking brake, and the gear lever has been moved forward to create more space in the center console. The steering wheel has also been redesigned compared to the previous model.

Space and Comfort

In the rear, the vehicle offers ample space for passengers and excellent storage capacity, sitting between the Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4 in size. The version we're testing today is equipped with tables in front of the passengers and air conditioning vents. Regarding material quality, you'll find high-quality leather on the seats and steering wheel, while the rest of the cabin features a significant amount of lightweight plastic.

Technological Features

2017 Ford Escape Technological Features

The Ford Escape comes equipped with a keyless entry and ignition system and the ability to open the rear hatch without pressing any buttons. Just placing your foot under the rear door will open it electronically, which is convenient when carrying heavy luggage or bags. It also features a panoramic sunroof and is equipped with Ford's SYNC 3 entertainment system, supporting both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

To control this system, there is an 8-inch touchscreen, although its placement could be better, as the design creates a slight obstruction that makes it hard to reach the menu while driving.

Information Display

Additionally, the cabin features a 4-inch display located between the gauges, providing the driver with various customizable information through buttons on the steering wheel. You can also control both the Bluetooth system and the cruise control, which includes a speed limiter, via the steering wheel buttons.

Driving Experience

2017 Ford Escape Driving Experience

Did you notice the EcoBoost badge on the back of the car in the images above? That is one of the best updates for the Escape this year. It is equipped with a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine that produces 242 horsepower and 366 Nm of torque, connected to a 6-speed automatic transmission with hill assist. This engine delivers impressive acceleration and responsiveness, though I wished the steering sensitivity matched its performance.

I don't mean to imply that there is a significant flaw in the steering; on the contrary, it feels quite solid and robust for a vehicle in this category. However, the steering feedback is somewhat light and artificial. Nevertheless, for a compact SUV, the overall driving experience is quite good.

Conclusion

2017 Ford Escape Evaluation

In conclusion, as consumers, we benefit significantly from vehicles like this that push manufacturers to incorporate higher technologies and features to compete. With a price range between 95,000 and 130,000 AED for the fully equipped model, I believe the Ford Escape has become a new and solid choice in this important segment.
