The affordable 7-seater SUV space is a segment that is crowded with buyers on the lookout for practicality, decent on-road performance, good equipment levels, and credible off-road dynamics. Battling it out is the venerable Mitsubishi Pajero, and in its latest avatar, the Chevrolet Trailblazer.

With a tall yet muscular stance, the Chevrolet Trailblazer features more bulges and curves in its design than the traditional boxy theme adopted by its Japanese counterpart. Though the 2017 Mitsubishi Pajero is a prominent sight on the roads of the UAE, its design is non-offensive and not one to turn many heads. The Trailblazer’s design isn’t ground-breaking either, but is evidently more contemporary in comparison.

Practical to be within, the Pajero’s cabin feels more upmarket compared to the rather bland interior of the Chevrolet Trailblazer. The Mitsubishi also scores with more on board equipment compared to the Chevrolet. A power sunroof, 12-speaker high definition audio system, auto climate control, and six airbags work in the Pajero’s favour while the Trailblazer trumps it in third row seating space. That said, with the last row in place, there isn’t much luggage room in either of these SUVs.

The Mitsubishi Pajero comes with two engine options, a 3.5-litre V6 and a 3.8-litre V6, with the latter churning out 250 horsepower and 330Nm of torque. Mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission that sends power to an All-Wheel-Drive system, the Pajero hits 100 km/h in 10.8 seconds and bears a top speed of 200 km/h.
The 2017 Chevrolet Trailblazer is powered by a 3.6-litre V6 that churns out 275hp and 350Nm of torque. Powering all four wheels, this engine gets mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission and propels the American SUV to 100 km/h in 10 seconds. The lighter Trailblazer is also more efficient than the Pajero with fuel consumption rated at 12.2 L/100 km compared to the Pajero’s 13.5 L/100 km.

The full option Chevrolet Trailblazer LTZ is priced well at AED 132,000. It is also faster to 100 km/h and more fuel efficient too. For a smidgen less, you will get a top-spec Mitsubishi Pajero with a 3.8-litre V6 which, though slower, comes with more equipment, a better cabin and bullet-proof reliability as standard.
