Attention, hot hatch enthusiasts – Mini has officially launched the highly anticipated John Cooper Works (JCW) versions of its next-gen Cooper and Aceman models. Most excitingly, these are the first-ever all-electric JCW offerings, making a bold statement in the high-performance EV market. While a petrol-powered JCW hatchback is expected by year-end, the spotlight for now is on these all-electric icons.
A Naming Twist
With the new generation, Mini has ditched the ‘Hatch’ name, renaming the three-door model simply as ‘Cooper’. This posed a bit of a challenge when it came to christening the hot version. Instead of calling it the Mini Cooper John Cooper Works, the electric hot hatch is officially named the Mini John Cooper Works Electric.
To complicate matters, the Aceman’s high-performance version isn’t called the Aceman JCW either. It’s now the Mini John Cooper Works Aceman. Confusing? Maybe. But those quirky Mini names are here to stay.
Powertrain and Performance Specs
Both the JCW Electric and JCW Aceman share the same all-electric powertrain. With an electric motor producing 254 bhp and 251 lb-ft of torque, both models channel power to the front wheels. The hatchback sprints from 0-62 mph in just 5.9 seconds, while the larger and slightly heavier Aceman achieves the same in 6.4 seconds. Both top out at 124 mph, but only when you activate the special ‘Boost’ mode via a button behind the steering wheel.
Range and Charging
The battery pack remains consistent with the SE trims of both standard Mini models, featuring a 54.2 kWh unit. The JCW Electric boasts a range of 251 miles on a single charge, while the Aceman manages 243 miles.
Charging is equally swift, with both models supporting 95 kW rapid charging, allowing a 10-80% charge in under 30 minutes. While this won’t make them top contenders for long-distance EVs, it’s impressive for city driving and performance-focused use.
Maintaining JCW Pedigree: Go-Kart Handling and Styling
Mini promises that these electrified JCWs preserve the brand’s hallmark ‘go-kart handling’ that enthusiasts have come to love. Both the JCW Electric and Aceman receive John Cooper Works-specific suspension setups, optimized for the performance.
In terms of styling, Mini has made sure these cars look the part. The JCW Electric comes standard with 18-inch wheels, while the Aceman upsizes to 19-inchers. Each features aggressive body kits, chunky rear wings, and the obligatory red brake calipers. A red roof is also standard on both models, further emphasizing their performance pedigree.
Interior: Sporty Meets Techy
Inside, the electric JCW models are a blend of classic sporty elements and modern tech. A black and red color scheme runs throughout the cabin, with both colors woven into the dashboard and steering wheel fabric. Sporty front seats help to hold you in place during spirited driving sessions, while the familiar circular OLED touchscreen brings the tech up to date, integrating all the infotainment and vehicle settings into a sleek package.
Ready for the Roads in 2025
The all-electric Mini JCW models made their public debut at the Paris Motor Show, and deliveries are expected to begin in April 2025. No word yet on their launch date in the UAE.
