BMW Introduces Vegan Interiors for a Sustainable Future
Introduction
BMW has announced that BMW and Mini models will feature vegan interiors starting in 2023. The German company began experimenting with animal-free interiors in 2020 and has been exploring the use of cactus and fully bio-based (plastic-free, biodegradable) materials for their interiors.
Commitment to Sustainability
With environmental consciousness becoming increasingly important, BMW is committed to reducing its CO2 emissions and establishing itself as an eco-friendly brand. The Group anticipates that demand for vegan interiors will rise in markets such as the US, China, and Europe.
Innovative Eco-Friendly Materials
BMW’s team is currently developing eco-friendly materials that mimic the properties of leather. By using these materials instead of traditional leather, BMW aims to reduce CO2 emissions in interior components by approximately 85 percent.
New Steering Wheel Design
The vehicles will also feature a new steering wheel material with a novel grain effect.
“With a steering wheel made from a high-quality vegan surface material, we are fulfilling the wishes of our customers who do not want to compromise on aesthetics, feel, and functionality. The innovative material withstands wear and tear from abrasion, perspiration, and moisture while possessing the desirable properties of leather,” says Uwe Köhler, Head of Development Body, Exterior Trim, Interior at the BMW Group.
Future Models and Materials
Furthermore, all the Mini and BMW models launched from 2025 will include trim parts made from a special plastic that contains approximately 30 percent recycled fishing nets and ropes. This initiative will also help reduce pollution in ports worldwide.
By incorporating waste materials from the maritime industry to produce both interior and exterior parts, BMW is set to decrease the carbon footprint of these materials by around 25 percent compared to conventional plastics.
