Dubai Extends National Sterilization Program and Its Impact on Public Transportation

Announcement of the Extension
According to the Supreme Committee of Crisis and Disaster Management in Dubai, in coordination with the Command and Control Center for combating COVID-19, the National Sterilization Program has been extended to operate 24 hours a day across all areas and communities in the emirate for two weeks, starting from 8 PM on Saturday, April 4, 2020. The committee also announced further restrictions on the movement of individuals and vehicles.
Impact of the Program on Public Transportation
This measure was taken by the committee to ensure the health and safety of the community. Consequently, the Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram services will be suspended until further notice, as stated by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). During this period, public transportation will be limited to buses and taxis only.
Services Offered During the Sterilization Period
The RTA also announced that its public bus services will be free for individuals permitted to leave their homes during the extended sterilization period. Additionally, there will be a 50% discount on fares for Dubai taxis and licensed taxi services.
Permitted Reasons for Leaving Home
Individuals will only be allowed to leave their homes for essential purposes, as outlined below:
- Acquiring food and necessities
- Seeking medical care
- Going to work in vital sectors
- Addressing any emergency needs
