General Details of the Expedition
In May 2024, an expedition will set off from the United Kingdom to cross the Nafud Desert in northern Saudi Arabia, charting a new route through this remote and arid region. The Nafud 2024 team plans to be the first to demonstrate the viability of alternative energy as a feasible option for exploration vehicles, transporting the team, supplies, and equipment across challenging off-road terrain.
Technology Used in the Expedition
Team leader Dr. Alan Crofts stated: "We are confident that we can practically use fully electric or hybrid vehicles for the expedition and have designed the route to incorporate suitable charging points."
We have partnered with BPIFCO Ltd in the UK, which is developing innovative mobile solar power technology. We will take the latest flexible power transfer mats on the expedition, enabling us to recharge vehicle batteries and power our equipment. The team is also exploring the potential use of biofuels to operate a diesel vehicle that can also provide backup charging.
Support and Collaboration
Interestingly, the team was recently invited to the Saudi Arabian Embassy in London to meet with Ambassador His Royal Highness Prince Khalid. Dr. Crofts shared, "His Royal Highness was very interested to hear about the expedition and our plans to use vehicles with alternative fuel sources." He pledged his personal support for the mission and promised assistance to ensure its success, providing inspiring ideas and insightful advice.
A formal reception for the team is scheduled to take place in Riyadh in May 2024 before their journey to the Nafud region.
