Ford Mustang GTD Breaks Nürburgring Record

Ford has again set the performance bar higher with the Mustang GTD, claiming a new lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Recording a time of 6 minutes and 52.072 seconds, the GTD has beaten its own best and cemented its status as the quickest American production car around the legendary German circuit.

Engineering Excellence: What's Behind the Record

The Mustang GTD's impressive improvement—five seconds quicker than its previous 6:57.685 lap—is the result of a series of careful upgrades. Ford's engineering team applied a revised powertrain calibration, more chassis torsional rigidity, improved ABS and traction control systems, and aerodynamic optimization. These improvements collectively helped the GTD deliver its improved performance on the track.

Under the bonnet, the GTD has an 815-horsepower 5.2-liter supercharged V8 engine. This power is channeled through a rear-mounted eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, which is connected through a carbon fiber torque tube. The suspension system of the car, designed in association with Multimatic, has semi-active spool-valve dampers and a pushrod and rocker arm architecture, providing superior handling and stability.

Beating Supercar Legends

The GTD's new lap time puts it in front of many of the world's most iconic supercars. It beats the Porsche 918 Spyder, Ferrari 296 GTB, and Lamborghini Aventador SV. WOW

The GTD still lags behind the Mercedes-AMG One's record-breaking 6:29.09 lap, but the Merc essentially has an F1 engine, so it's not a shame being behind the German beast.

A Testament to Ford's Racing Heritage

Taking a cue from the Mustang GT3 program, the GTD merges race-tested technologies into a road-going package. Active aerodynamics, carbon-ceramic brakes, and a bodykit inspired by racing cars emphasize the car's track-biased design.

Even with its track-honing performance prowess, the GTD remains drivable daily. With standard amenities such as indicator stalks and windscreen wipers, it fills the need for a car that balances between a track and a daily drive without losing out on performance.
