Will Honda Release an Electric Type R?
Since 2020, Honda has been exploring the possibility of an electric Type R. However, despite growing pressure from stricter emissions regulations, the company has yet to release a performance EV with the coveted red badge.
Why Developing an Electric Type R Is Challenging
Speaking with Auto Express, Toshihiro Akiwa, head of Honda's BEV Development Center, outlined the difficulties in making an electric car that delivers the same thrill as a gasoline-powered Type R.
"A battery and motor have different characteristics, so we can't come up with something exactly the same as before. As an EV, how can we provide the joy of driving? We haven't given up, but it's not just about power—it’s about the sound, vibration, acceleration, and the human experience. These are the joys of driving."
Honda’s Future Electric Sports Car Plans
Despite these challenges, Honda remains committed to launching an electric sports car before 2030. The luxury division Acura has already confirmed a new fully electric NSX model, expected to arrive in 2027 or 2028.
The Honda 0 Series and NSX Successor
The upcoming performance EV will be based on Honda's 0 (Zero) Series electric architecture. This platform will also support the Ohio-built 0 Saloon and 0 SUV, which debuted at CES in Las Vegas.
When Will We See an Electric Type R?
Even if the new NSX gets a Type R variant, it is unlikely to be available from day one. Experts predict a hotter version of Honda’s electric performance car will arrive by 2030 at the earliest.
Competition in the Performance EV Market
While Honda faces hurdles, several automakers have already launched high-performance EVs, including:
- Alpine A290 – Hot hatch
- Hyundai Ioniq 5 N – Performance crossover
- MG Cyberster – Electric convertible
- Audi RS E-Tron GT – Sports sedan
- Porsche 718 EV – Upcoming performance coupe
The Legacy of the Type R
For now, the Honda Civic Type R continues the legacy of high-performance combustion engines. Since its introduction in 1992 with the NSX-R, the Type R badge has symbolized driving excellence.
