Imagine yourself in the back of a luxury car driving down Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, comfortably working on your laptop on your next business venture. A bottle of sparkling water, soothing music, and carefully stitched leather surrounding you, all of them marvelously complementing each other to give you the feel and ambiance of the successful entrepreneur in you. Now imagine yourself heading to Habtoor Polo Resort & Club for an unwinding staycation - the Jaguar XJ Diamond Edition is the silver lining to your luxurious lifestyle.

The Jaguar XJ is and has always been Jaguar’s most successful flagship product, and rightfully so. Despite competing head to head with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7-Series and the Lexus LS, the Jaguar XJ has curved up a large following for its value-for-money proposition. The XJ that we received, was even more credit-worthy, due to being the ultra-exclusive ‘Diamond Edition’.

Exterior

If you look closely at the exterior, the XJ’s flowing contours match very well with its predecessors. The full LED headlights and cat-claw inspired tail lamps, come together to enhance the broad, stately stance and scream luxury, power, and beauty. Upfront, the Jaguar XJ L Diamond Edition features full LED adaptive headlights, full LED daytime running lights, along with LED turn signal lights with the Jaguar logo proudly embossed on them.

The multi-spoke 20-inch wheels are designed to look even bigger, giving the car a very grand appearance. Looking at the back, the full LED tail lamps give off a very classic vibe. The diffuser is now sprayed in gloss black, which is complemented very well with chrome dual exhaust outlets.

Interior

Inside, there’s a panoramic sunroof that features heat-reflective glass panels, filtering UV rays and flooding the interior with natural light. The seats, dressed in Jet Ivory leather with diamond jet stitching, are 18-way power adjustable and feature a soothing massage function, too. The three-spoke steering wheel is wrapped with leather all around, and chrome trims to complete the overall form. The steering wheel does come with a heating option, which though strange, could be useful for those cold winter mornings in Dubai.

The full TFT color display gauges are extremely visible in bright lights, and the color of the cluster can be adjusted to your liking. The circular AC vents are also very well designed, unobserved in any other car in the past. The good news is, all Jaguar XJs are equipped with 20 crystal-clear 825-watt Meridian Speakers that are controlled by the touch screen in the center, which is quite responsive. As expected, it is equipped with navigation, vehicle settings, Bluetooth calling, Bluetooth streaming, and much more.

Safety & Tech

Onboard technology includes, but is not limited to, a two-zone climate control system, laptop tray, HDMI plug, remote control, heated seats with full massage function, LCD screens (not touch-screen) with headphones, and shades on both the rear passenger windows. The trunk serves approximately 430 liters of cargo space, which is more than enough for three suitcases.

Drive

So, it’s luxurious, but what about the power? The 3.0-litre supercharged V6 creates 335 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque – enough to push the luxury sedan to 100 km/h in under 6 seconds. The steering wheel is quite emotionless as expected, but precise at the same time. The 8-speed gearbox is buttery-smooth and astonishingly quick. Despite having a massive chassis, the big brake kit makes coming to a halt, a piece of cake.

Verdict

It has more character and charisma than its German rivals. It isn’t an S-Class by any means, but by far the best bang for your buck. The Jaguar XJ L Diamond Edition is a great vehicle for those who really value luxury, but would rather invest their money on the stock market than to don the three-pointed star on the front of their vehicle. Jaguar set out to build a luxury four-door sedan with a sporty personality, and it has achieved this, but in the bargain compromised on areas such as front seat comfort and luxury.

Cons:

- Outward visibility is hindered by narrow rear glass

- Not as luxurious in the front seats
