Mazda introduced the EZ-60, a stylish electric SUV, specifically targeting the Chinese market. Co-designed with Changan Automobile, the EZ-60 is Mazda's next step to try to find its footing in the rapidly changing electric vehicle (EV) market in China.
Competing with the likes of the Tesla Model Y, the EZ-60 combines Mazda's unique design elements with the automaker's advanced electric powertrain technology.
Design and Platform
The EZ-60 embodies Mazda's commitment to design excellence, delivering elegant lines and a dynamic silhouette that are befitting the company's Kodo design ethic.
Underpinned by Changan's EPA1 modular platform, the same underpin for the Mazda EZ-6 sedan and Deepal S07 crossover, the EZ-60 is leveraged through a flexible and scalable platform specially optimized for electric vehicles.
It facilitates effective packaging, also a determining point for the car's spacious interior room and well-proportioned appearance.​
Powertrain and Performance
The EZ-60 is driven by a range-extended electric powertrain, utilizing an electric motor and a gasoline engine utilized as a generator to charge the battery. The configuration provides a combined output of 190 kW (approximately 255 horsepower) with robust performance for city driving and highway driving.
The car offers an electric-only 160-kilometer range (about 99 miles), which is ideal for normal driving with the range extender giving confidence that trips longer than the range can be made without needing to stop to charge often.​
Interior and Features
Inside, the EZ-60 is designed with comfort and technology in mind. The interior will feature premium materials with a clean design, which is consistent with Mazda's interior layout.
Advanced infotainment systems with a large center screen and digital instrument cluster make it convenient for drivers to access vehicle functions and connectivity features. While no particular details regarding interior room and cargo capacity have been announced, taking on the EPA1 platform suggests maximizing interior room and flexibility.​
Market Position and Availability
The EZ-60 will be launched in China, where it will compete with domestic and international EV manufacturers. Mazda has signed a deal with Changan with the aim of leveraging local manufacturing and supply chain economies of scale to make the EZ-60 competitive in terms of pricing and availability.
While there is no official word on the EZ-60's availability outside China, its development reflects Mazda's broader strategy to expand its EV offerings globally.​
