Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake

Mercedes has unveiled the CLA Shooting Brake, an elegant and highly dynamic electric vehicle that takes the third-generation CLA family in exciting new directions.

As the brand's first dedicated electric station wagon built on the flexible Mercedes Architecture (MMA), it consciously blends functionality and efficiency while aligning with Mercedes' ongoing commitment to electric vehicles.

Design That Transcends Traditional Car Classification

Visually, the Shooting Brake resembles the CLA sedan from the front to the A-pillar, including the signature upper light strip and compact shape. However, it asserts its unique identity with an extended roofline that flows into a sloped rear window and oval-shaped taillight graphics.

Aluminum trims on the slender roof rails and frameless doors announce a luxurious finish, while the lightly camouflaged versions showcase how understated sporty elegance can be. Compared to most SUVs, this design is bold without appearing bulky.

Aerodynamic enhancements not only boost aesthetics but also improve efficiency. The longer roof enhances airflow and reduces drag, giving the Shooting Brake an advantage in range compared to fastback sedans. Mercedes claims that the electric versions will offer a range of up to 761 km (472 miles) according to WLTP standards, thanks to its streamlined design and high-capacity battery pack.

Electric and Hybrid: A Dual Personality in One Package

The CLA is built on Mercedes' new MMA architecture, accommodating both electric and hybrid drive systems. The model will launch in two all-electric forms: the CLA 250+ with rear-wheel drive and the CLA 350 4MATIC with all-wheel drive.

Both utilize an 85-kWh battery, supporting 800-volt charging and DC input of up to 320 kW. This allows the vehicle to add nearly 323 km of range in just ten minutes, and it accommodates home charging through a standard plug and CCS-to-NACS adapter.

The electric 250+ generates about 268 horsepower, while the 350 AWD includes an additional front motor for a total of 349 horsepower. This configuration enables the flagship model to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 4.8 seconds, aligning with performance targets in the luxury compact electric car segment.

Hybrid models are expected to arrive later, featuring a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a 27-horsepower electric motor within an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, with outputs ranging from 136 to 190 horsepower, and optional 4MATIC all-wheel drive.

Interior and Cargo Space: Redefining Practicality for Electric Vehicles

Inside, the CLA Shooting Brake relies on the high-spec MB.OS infotainment system, an intelligent system powered by AI MBUX that includes features like a high-definition display, eye-tracking, and a touchscreen for passengers.

To minimize sunlight impact in summer and reduce heat loss in winter, the CLA Shooting Brake also features a large panoramic glass roof with thermally insulated glass.

The glass roof can switch from transparent to opaque at the touch of a button and includes integrated ambient lighting, a first for Mercedes. LED units illuminate from the front panel to the 158 stars in the glass, which may shine in various colors.

Cargo space is one of its standout features. The vehicle offers 455 liters of trunk capacity, which can be expanded to 1,290 liters by folding the rear seats, while a front trunk ("frunk") adds another 101 liters of utility. These figures make it significantly more practical than the sedan, whether for weekly errands or daily tasks.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Will there be gasoline or hybrid options for the CLA Shooting Brake?

Yes. While the initial launch is fully electric, Mercedes will introduce hybrid versions in 2026 featuring a 1.5-liter turbocharged internal combustion engine and mild hybrid support, maintaining flexibility in powertrain options.

What range can I expect?

Mercedes estimates a range of up to 761 km (472 miles) according to WLTP standards on the 85 kWh battery. Real-world EPA estimates may be more challenging, with 400 miles being a possible scenario. Ultra-fast charging can provide nearly 200 miles in just 10 minutes.

What’s under the front hood?

The CLA Shooting Brake features a front trunk ("frunk") with approximately 101 liters of additional storage, ideal for small equipment or charging cables.

Does it have all-wheel drive?

Yes, in the CLA 350 4MATIC model. An additional motor on the front axle activates when needed, maintaining efficiency while providing extra traction.

How practical is it compared to the CLA sedan?

Although it shares dimensions up to the B-pillar, the Shooting Brake offers additional cargo space, increased rear headroom, and a more flexible roofline, making it far more practical for families or active lifestyles.
