Introduction
Undoubtedly, the Nissan Patrol has long been regarded as the leading desert vehicle in the UAE. While some may argue that the Toyota Land Cruiser holds that title, enthusiasts will appreciate that the Nissan Patrol has clinched 13 victories in global rally championships, thanks to Dr. Mohammed Ben Sulayem. This legacy has led to the creation of the special Desert Edition designed for sandy terrains. The Patrol remains Nissan's best-selling model in the Middle East, having served the region for over 65 years.
Key Features
- Engine: 5.6L V8
- Transmission: 7-speed automatic
- Power: 400 horsepower / 558 Nm of torque
- Top Speed: 250 km/h
- Price: AED 260,000
Exterior Design
The exterior design of the Patrol Desert Edition can be described as utilitarian, resembling the current SE / LE models. However, a closer look reveals wheel arches that lend it an aggressive stance, complemented by 18-inch beadlock wheels, which enhance its aesthetic appeal and rugged performance in desert conditions.
The Desert Edition is also equipped with substantial protective plates at the front and rear, shielding the lower parts of the vehicle from rocks and obstacles encountered on rough terrains. A prominent flag pole further enhances visibility when traversing through vast sand dunes, adding to the Patrol’s renowned aesthetics.
Interior Design
Unfortunately, the interior of the Patrol leaves much to be desired. It features fabric seats and plastic panels, reminiscent of a Nissan Sunny. Despite this, the seats are comfortable, providing a cinema-like experience for passengers.
This version boasts ample space, comfortably seating six in the rear, allowing for a total of eight passengers to travel with ease.
Additionally, it features a high-quality air conditioning system, with strategically placed vents in the rear and 12 roof-mounted outlets to ensure a cool cabin even in extreme temperatures, especially while driving in the desert. The rear seats can also fold down to provide ample space for gear and equipment.
Safety and Technology
The Desert Edition comes equipped with six airbags, providing comprehensive protection for both the driver and passengers, including curtain airbags. Visual and audible alerts notify you when tire pressure drops below the required level. Off-road features include a tow rope and sand ladders for when you get stuck in the dunes.
The vehicle also includes an 8-inch infotainment system with a modern navigation setup and Bluetooth connectivity, allowing you to link your smart device for calls and music. Front and rear cameras assist with parking this beast in tight spaces.
Driving Experience
With a length of 5 meters and a height of approximately 2 meters, maneuvering can be challenging. On regular roads, it feels luxurious, akin to high-end vehicles. However, during turns, it's clear that this vehicle is primarily designed for off-road use. Its robust suspension system may create resistance during corners, almost compelling you to maintain a straight line. After testing it for several days, I can safely say I would prefer a different vehicle for city driving.
However, in its natural environment, you quickly understand why it is dubbed the Desert Edition. I can confidently state that this is the best off-road vehicle I have ever driven.
The difference between the standard version and this Desert Edition lies in its suspension system, which has been modified by Dr. Mohammed Ben Sulayem, offering an unparalleled driving experience.
One remarkable feature is the onboard air pressure system that allows you to lower tire pressure without worrying about finding a gas station nearby.

Verdict
Clearly, this is a typical Patrol that has been specially equipped for off-road aficionados. However, the vehicle's high off-road capabilities make it less suitable for everyday use. With fabric seats and a price tag of AED 250,000, it might be a tough sell for many.

- Exceptional off-road capabilities.
- 5.6L V8 engine delivering impressive power and torque for any task.
