2016 Peugeot 208 Front

The Peugeot 208 is a supermini that has been part of the French manufacturer’s line-up since 2012. In a fiercely competitive market segment, the 208 competes with the Ford Fiesta, Kia Rio, and Nissan Micra, aiming to attract budget-conscious first-time buyers.

Exterior

Designed by Pierre Authier, the Peugeot 208 showcases iconic design elements that clearly identify it as part of the French manufacturer’s lineup. As a successor to the 207, the 208 is built on the PSA PF1 platform and presents a chic offering with charisma that its rivals lack.

Dressed in GT Line attire, the 208 features a revised grille with scarlet red accents, 17-inch five twin-spoke alloys wrapped in Michelin Pilot Exalto tires, and tasteful chrome detailing that accentuates its voluptuous curves.

Interior

The interior of the Peugeot 208 GT Line 2016 makes its sporting intentions clear with a flat-bottom steering wheel, aluminum pedals, heavily bolstered sports seats, and an abundance of faux carbon fiber trim. However, even with fine red stitching, the cabin is primarily made of less appealing materials: leatherette and hard plastic.

An ergonomic disaster, the seating position in the Peugeot 208 2016 is less than satisfactory. With inadequate legroom and a disappointing amount of headroom for rear seat passengers, it is evident that the cabin design does not cater to today’s youth and their often extravagant hairstyles.

Safety & Tech

Taking center stage is the 7-inch infotainment screen situated atop the dashboard. While it includes inbuilt navigation and various features, it is not the most user-friendly. The Celio Panoramic Roof with integrated mood lighting, however, is a welcome feature that distinguishes the French B-segment offering.

The Peugeot 208 boasts a Euro NCAP 5-Star safety rating, making it one of the safest vehicles in its category, equipped with driver and passenger airbags, ABS, traction control, an electric child lock, a rear parking camera, automatic headlights, and a central locking system.

Drive

Powered by a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine, the Peugeot 208 GT Line delivers 120 horsepower and 160 Nm of torque to the front wheels. This makes it powerful and among the quickest to accelerate to 100 km/h compared to its American, Korean, and Japanese competitors.

However, mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission, the driving experience can be marred by a rattling instrument cluster and an intrusive engine noise during hard acceleration. The Sports mode, which seems almost ineffective, merely increases engine noise without enhancing performance.

Averaging 3,500 – 4,000 RPM while cruising at highway speeds, the Peugeot 208 demonstrates poor fuel efficiency, consuming approximately 13.1 liters per 100 kilometers. It is clear that the transmission hinders the French hatchback's performance aspirations.

Verdict

Priced at AED 71,500, the Peugeot 208 GT Line is an artistic creation within its segment, albeit on the pricier side. While it may not guarantee a smile on your face, one thing is certain: you will not leave without the experience of tinnitus.
