We might have needed to discuss this vehicle 16 years ago, not today, but Porsche had other plans. Sixteen years ago, the brand from Zuffenhausen introduced the coupe variant of the third generation of the Cayenne as the first of Porsche's family models, bringing its racing philosophy into the realm of versatile SUVs without compromising the values it is known for.
While BMW may be credited with transforming SUVs into high-performance driving machines, Porsche has a different mission: to prove to the world that the Cayenne Coupe we are testing is the best and most dynamic coupe SUV available.
Exterior Design
To earn this title, the Cayenne has undergone a series of modifications compared to the traditional Cayenne. These changes primarily focus on the pronounced slope of the roofline, which descends more towards the rear, enhancing the coupe's dynamic appeal. The modifications include:
- A prominent upper spoiler that enhances the vehicle's sporty character.
- A shallower windshield and less deep supports compared to the traditional model.
- Redesigned rear doors and rear wheel arches that increase the vehicle's width by 18 mm.
Dynamic Features
The traditional Cayenne Turbo is recognized as the first multi-use vehicle equipped with an active rear spoiler that can electronically adjust its angle. In contrast, the new Cayenne Coupe has taken this concept further by adding:
- A new adaptive rear spoiler that actively functions as part of Porsche's active aerodynamics system.
- The rear spoiler extends by 135 mm at a speed of 90 km/h to increase downforce on the rear axle.
Roof Options and Interior Space
The Cayenne Coupe offers two roof options:
- A fixed panoramic glass roof that provides an exceptional sense of spaciousness.
- A carbon fiber roof that enhances the sporty character of the vehicle.
Passenger Comfort
The new Cayenne Coupe offers ample interior space for four passengers as a standard feature. In the rear:
- The rear seat features a long bench design that accommodates two separate seats as standard.
- Comfortable rear seats can be requested at no additional cost.
- The seating position for rear passengers is 30 mm lower compared to the traditional Cayenne.
Mechanical Performance
The Cayenne Coupe comes in three variants: Cayenne, Cayenne S, and Cayenne Turbo, featuring specifications that include:
- A 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine producing 340 horsepower.
- The Cayenne S Coupe is equipped with a 2.9-liter engine that increases output to 440 horsepower.
- The Cayenne Turbo Coupe features a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine generating 550 horsepower.
Driving Experience
During my driving experience, I accelerated the Cayenne Turbo to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds, feeling as though I was behind the wheel of a high-performance coupe rather than an SUV.
The brakes, with the front ones optionally made from ceramic, effectively control the vehicle's weight as it surges forward.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Porsche's late arrival to the coupe SUV segment is certainly a welcome addition, although we would have preferred them to pioneer this category rather than follow in its footsteps.
