Range Rover PHEV Ghaith

Land Rover’s entry into the full-size luxury hybrid SUV segment, the Range Rover PHEV P400e, debuted in 2018 as part of a comprehensive model revision. This hybrid variant serves as an efficient alternative to the traditionally diesel-powered Range Rovers and the popular supercharged V8 petrol models, particularly appealing in regions with high fuel costs and electrified vehicle tax incentives.

Key Features:
Engine 2.0-liter / 4-cylinder

Range Rover PHEV

Although the P400e may not possess the psychological edge of the supercharged V8 for some, its impressive claimed fuel efficiency of 2.8l/100km, 64g/km CO2 emissions, and 51km electric-only range make it an attractive option for many buyers in the Middle East. The plug-in hybrid configuration is ideally suited for the Range Rover, and with just a 5kg increase in weight compared to the turbo-diesel V8, the P400e maintains its robust performance.

Performance and Efficiency

The P400e’s substantial electric motor torque is indispensable for a large luxury vehicle and off-roader, providing seamless acceleration. The hybrid system combines a 296HP 2-liter 4-cylinder engine with a smooth 8-speed automatic gearbox and a 114HP electric motor, resulting in a total system output of 410HP and 640Nm of torque.

Weighing in at 2509kg, the P400e can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 6.8 seconds, demonstrating agility in both urban and highway environments. While it may sound slightly strained at high RPMs, it is unlikely that drivers will sustain full throttle long enough to deplete its batteries. The vehicle also benefits from regenerative braking and charging from the petrol engine, with Land Rover claiming a conventional charging time of 7 hours and 30 minutes, or 2 hours and 45 minutes with a high-capacity charger.

Off-Road Capability

The P400e retains the same four-wheel drive system as the regular Range Rover, ensuring top-tier off-road performance. With unchanged driveline hardware, it boasts impressive off-road capabilities, including low-gear ratios, locking differentials, adjustable ride height for improved clearance, and the Terrain Response adaptive off-road driver assistance system.

Design and Comfort

Capable of virtually silent electric driving off-road, the P400e’s combustion engine should remain active during water fording (up to 900mm) to prevent exhaust flooding. Visually, the revised Range Rover features minor updates such as grille design, faux side vents, and lighting enhancements, alongside more comfortable seating and improved cabin technology. The air suspension provides a smooth ride, effectively absorbing the impact of large alloy wheels, while the elevated seating position offers excellent visibility for such a large vehicle.
