Incident Overview
An Emirati youth has been arrested for reckless driving and damaging public property in Abu Dhabi. A video released online shows the youth driving on the pavement in a vehicle without a silencer, crushing plants and street furniture. Abu Dhabi Police reported that these offences occurred in the presence of onlookers who filmed the incident and shared it online.
Legal Consequences
Due to the youth's actions, which endangered the lives of other road users, the case was referred to the Public Prosecution. The penalties imposed included:
- A fine of 2,000 Dirhams
- 23 black points on his driving record
- Impounding of the vehicle for 60 days
Instead of serving jail time, the youth was sentenced to complete community service, focusing on:
- Cleaning the streets
- Repairing damaged infrastructure
- Re-landscaping public areas
Public Statement
In a statement issued by Abu Dhabi Police, they emphasized that individuals found damaging public property will face similar consequences. Additionally, those who film and publish destructive videos online will also be subject to similar penalties.
