Introduction

Today, we are testing the Renault Zoe, one of the first electric vehicles available in our markets. Renault sold eight Zoe cars to the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority back in 2015. Now, we have the long-range version, the Zoe 40. Let’s see how the Zoe compares to its fuel-powered competitors and other electric vehicles available in our market.

Exterior Design

The Renault Zoe stands out with its compact size, comparable to vehicles like the Suzuki Swift or Kia Rio. It features a sleek and simple design, highlighted by a nice blue touch in the headlights, which helps distinguish it on the road. The prominent Renault logo in the center also serves as the cover for the car’s charging port. The vehicle is equipped with fog lights integrated into the design, while the rear lights also feature blue accents.

Interior Design

The interior design of the Renault Zoe is quite familiar, resembling that of the Renault Clio. However, the instrument panel in front of the driver has been replaced with a horizontal screen to display all necessary information. In terms of space, it is adequate for both the driver and passenger, though slightly tight for taller individuals in the back. The trunk capacity is decent for a car of this size, reaching up to 338 liters, which can be increased by folding the rear seats. However, the rear seats come as a single piece, making it impossible to fold just a part of them.

The materials used in the Renault Zoe are predominantly lightweight plastic, which was somewhat surprising given that this vehicle is priced at 136,000 dirhams. I wish Renault had paid more attention to the quality of materials used in the car, especially at this price point.

Features and Technology

Renault Zoe Features

Let's start with the car's battery. It is equipped with a lithium-ion battery that provides a range of up to 300 km under normal driving conditions on a full charge. The battery can be fully charged in four hours using a standard charger or a home-installed charging station. Using a fast charger, you can reach 80% battery charge in about an hour.

As for other features, they are quite basic. The car comes with keyless entry and ignition, the Renault R-Link entertainment system with a touchscreen, navigation, and Bluetooth connectivity for displaying energy consumption information. It also features automatic climate control, cruise control, and a battery recharge system during braking.

Driving Experience

Driving Renault Zoe

One of the most surprising aspects of driving the Renault Zoe is the complete absence of engine noise. For the first time in my life, I found myself needing time to adjust to the silence; it’s a truly strange feeling that electric cars offer.

The Zoe is designed for city driving, with an electric motor that produces 92 horsepower and torque of 220 Nm. It allows the car to reach a top speed of 140 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 13.2 seconds. These numbers aren’t particularly thrilling for driving enthusiasts, but that’s not the purpose of this vehicle.

Final Verdict

Renault Zoe Verdict

I hope for the day when we can purchase an electric car confidently knowing it outperforms its fuel-powered competitors. Have we reached that day with the Renault Zoe? Certainly not. The only thing the Zoe offers at a price of 136,000 dirhams is the feeling of contributing to environmental preservation. However, when comparing it to its competitors at this price, I could buy two or even three cars with similar or better specifications. Alternatively, you could purchase a Renault Duster and still have enough money left to cover fuel expenses for nearly 20 years.
