2013 Chevrolet Tahoe Review: Performance, Interior, and Features
Tahoe is the USA’s 2nd largest freshwater lake, and perhaps that inspired the naming of the full-size Chevrolet SUV, the Tahoe. The 2013 Chevy Tahoe is largely similar to the previous year’s model but remains a popular choice in the Gulf region, starting at a lower price range compared to its counterparts, the GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade.
We will describe the differences between these vehicles shortly. All models require a key to start, and the top trims feature a remote starting function separate from the key. Our test vehicle was the top-end LTZ trim, and some features described may not be available in lower trims or may be offered as optional add-ons.
Drive
All versions of the 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe come with a single engine option: a 5.3-liter V8 delivering 320 horsepower and 454 Nm of torque. The transmission is a six-speed automatic, equipped with 2H, 4A, 4H, and 4L modes on the transfer case.
In our on-road testing, we were able to achieve 0-100 km/h in approximately 9 seconds and reach up to 140 km/h in 17 seconds. Check out the videos below:
The Tahoe's performance is average for a full-size SUV, with a maximum speed of 185 km/h. We recorded an average fuel economy of 18L/100km in the city and approximately 12L/100km on the highway, yielding an overall average of 17L/100km combined. Note that fuel consumption nearly doubles in most off-road conditions.
The Tahoe braked from 120-0 km/h in about 4.5 seconds. Watch the braking performance here:
The V8 engine produces a deep, throaty growl that encourages higher revs, yet remains quiet at cruising speeds. Overall, the drive is pleasant, with responsive steering that provides decent feedback. However, the vehicle's weight and size are noticeable, especially during quick startups and overtaking maneuvers.
The suspension is exceptionally quiet, absorbing thuds and bumps from speed breakers and potholes with minimal disturbance. However, there is noticeable rebound and bounce, along with slight sway and pitch motions, even on smooth UAE roads. Off-road, the suspension performs adequately, although the low approach angle of the stock bumper raises concerns about clearance when climbing sand dunes.
The traction control and stability control systems can be completely disabled via a switch, but the Tahoe lacks a locking front or rear differential, which may limit off-road capabilities.
Interior
Externally, the Chevy Tahoe is one of the most aesthetically pleasing and well-proportioned full-size SUVs. The interior is well-appointed, featuring a user-friendly dashboard and center console layout. The fit and finish are acceptable, with no squeaks or rattles. However, the front dash has a hard and tacky feel, and the color scheme—chocolate (or dark brown), grey A/C vents, black center console, and beige seats—might not be visually appealing to everyone.
Similar to some other SUVs, the Tahoe does not have locking rear seat belts for child car seats. While it includes anchor points for child seats, many do not come with the necessary straps.
The front seats are comfortable, although not snug. The leather in the top LTZ trim heats up, and seat cooling is a welcome feature. Unfortunately, the second and third-row seats have fixed back positions, limiting recline options for a more comfortable seating position. The A/C vents for the second row are positioned high, potentially causing discomfort by directly blasting air at passengers' heads.
The third row has minimal height from the vehicle’s floor, forcing adults to sit with their knees elevated or cross-legged. However, the third-row seats can be easily removed for additional cargo space, while the second row can be folded electrically via a switch, although they need to be manually repositioned.
The BOSE sound system delivers quality audio without distortion, even at high volumes and with strong bass. It features speed-sensitive automatic volume adjustment. Videos can only be played on the front center display when the vehicle is stationary, while the single roof display remains active at all times. VCDs cannot be played, although DVDs function correctly.
Verdict
The 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe starts at a base price of AED 155,500 for the LS trim. Other trims include the LT at AED 162,500, the Z71 at AED 176,000, and the LTZ at AED 204,500. Standard equipment across the range includes keyless entry, power mirrors, air conditioning, an electrochromic rearview mirror, illuminated visors, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
