Tesla Unveils 2025 Model Y Juniper: World's Best Selling Car Gets Refresh
Tags:
It was about time that Tesla finally took off the wraps of the long-awaited 2025 Model Y, code named "Juniper," with a full lineup of updates. Now unveiled in China, the refresh promises aesthetic and functional changes for one of the best-selling cars ever made: the Model Y is currently the world's best-selling car.
A New Face for a Familiar Shape
The Model Y Juniper retains its silhouette but gets a more aggressive and streamlined front end. The most striking change is the new LED light bar that runs across the width of the front, a design cue borrowed from the Cybertruck, which gives it a bold, futuristic look.
At the rear, Tesla has again opted for a full-width light bar, while the "TESLA" name is spelled out in block letters.
Interior Changes
Inside, the Model Y now gets a new look that pushes it closer to the updated Model 3. The interior looks more premium as it now incorporates better materials that include black vegan suede for an added touch of luxury.
The center 15.4-inch touchscreen has been slightly improved, and attaching an 8-inch screen to the rear passenger end does ease life, though the gear selector has also migrated to the touchscreen for even more screen-based controls from Tesla which just happens to be very convenient(?).
Performance and Efficiency
Details of changes to the powertrain are thin, but Tesla claims the Model Y Juniper is more efficient with some aerodynamic tweaks and other adjustments. Drag coefficient has been reduced from 0.23 to 0.22, which should let it go a little further. Acceleration times have been improved and the Long Range model now gets to 0-60 mph in 4.3 seconds, down from 5.0 seconds.
Updated Safety Features
The Model Y features a monocoque chassis designed for enhanced crash energy absorption. Its autonomous driving capabilities are supported by sophisticated driver assistance technologies, including a forward-facing autopilot camera and blind spot indicators integrated into the side mirrors.
The interior's OTA update-capable touchscreen shows animations for lane changes during autonomous driving. The vehicle comes with a Standard Autopilot system, with options to upgrade to Enhanced or Full Self-Driving packages.
Pricing and Availability
The Model Y Juniper will start at 263,500 renminbi in China, or about $35,900, a 5.4% increase over the previous model. Deliveries in China are expected to begin in March, with a spring 2025 launch in the United States. Further regional launch timelines are expected to be announced in due course.
