Tesla Recalls Model X and Model S Due to Handbrake Issue
Recall Details
Tesla has initiated a recall for some of its Model X and Model S vehicles due to a safety equipment issue. Previously, the company had conducted recalls related to rear seat problems and others concerning door opening and closing issues for the Model X, but those involved very few units.
Recently, the American automaker announced the recall of approximately 53,000 units worldwide for both models due to a potential handbrake problem. This issue affects vehicles manufactured between February and October 2016.
Tesla's Statement on the Issue
Tesla stated that the handbrakes produced during this period were manufactured by a third party, which is responsible for the issue that prevents the vehicle from moving after the handbrake has been engaged.
Impact on Users
So far, Tesla has not received any reports of accidents attributed to this issue, other than notifications from some customers who received alerts indicating that the handbrake requires maintenance or that it cannot be disengaged. The company reported that a small percentage of vehicles, estimated between 2% and 5%, utilized these handbrakes during the period from February to October.
