Comprehensive Review of the Volkswagen Beetle

2016 Volkswagen Beetle Front View

Introduction

The Volkswagen Beetle has been a beloved icon for about 20 years since its redesigned debut in 1997 as the ‘new Beetle’. Initially, it became an instant hit among the youth, showcasing a beefier body and voluptuous looks. While it wasn’t as ‘tiny’ as its predecessor, the name ‘Beetle’ remained. A similar case can be made for its competitor, the MINI Cooper. However, the ‘new Beetle’ ended its run in 2010, making way for a new iteration that we will review in this article.

Exterior

2016 Volkswagen Beetle Side View

The exterior of the latest Volkswagen Beetle retains much of the original design, but with notable enhancements. It features a lower profile and aggressive styling compared to the older generation. The variant I tested was the ‘exclusive’ model, which includes:

  • 20” alloy wheels
  • Bi-Xenon headlamps with Daytime Running Lights (DRLs)

Overall, the Beetle maintains its iconic look while staying stylish and modern.

Interior

2016 Volkswagen Beetle Interior

The interior of the Volkswagen Beetle reflects a typical Volkswagen design ethos, offering an ergonomic setup for enjoyable driving. The exclusive variant features:

  • Leather seats
  • Climate control
  • Park assist
  • Navigation system
  • Leather steering wheel with audio controls
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Special turbo gauge
  • Glossy dashboard finish

The seats are comfortable and complement the functional interior effectively, leaving no complaints overall.

Driving Experience

2016 Volkswagen Beetle Engine

The driving experience in the Volkswagen Beetle is particularly engaging, especially with the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine from the GTI, delivering 210 BHP. This power is paired with a 6-speed DSG transmission and a front-wheel-drive system, ensuring a thrilling ride. The Beetle drives similarly to a Golf GTI, which is satisfying given that it shares the platform with the Jetta. With the top down, cruising the streets becomes a fun yet controlled experience.

Verdict

Having never driven the Volkswagen Beetle before, I now understand its appeal as a youth-oriented mode of transportation.
