Volkswagen Scirocco R Review

We recently had the opportunity to test the Volkswagen Scirocco R, and it left quite an impression on us. Since its last update in 2008, the car hasn’t changed significantly. Is that enough? Let’s find out:

Design and Style

From the front, the car looks acceptable, but compared to other hatchbacks, it could use a refresh. For instance, it would look more appealing with 20-inch wheels similar to those on the Opel Astra OPC that we tested. Additionally, a sportier exhaust like that on the Audi RS4 Avant would enhance its appearance. Lastly, the headlights could be more attractive; they currently resemble those of a sedan. Even the headlights on the 2014 Nissan Tiida look better!

Interior Materials and Quality

The interior features plenty of leather and soft-touch materials, making it superior to the Ford Focus ST and Opel Astra OPC. The cabin is sporty and elegant, giving you the feeling of driving a luxury vehicle. It reminds me of Audi interiors, particularly the steering wheel design that resembles that of the Audi RS4 Avant.

Space and Visibility

This is where the car falls short. Rear legroom is limited, making it suitable only for children. Headroom is also restricted, and I found myself bumping my head several times while trying to exit or adjust the seats. The small windows do not help with blind spots either. Surprisingly, there is no blind-spot warning system. A German car without a blind-spot alert? That's unheard of. I nearly collided with several vehicles due to both the blind spots and the poor visibility. They need to incorporate a blind-spot warning in the next generation.

Technology and Interior Features

The technology is decent, featuring almost everything you would expect. There is a navigation system, push start button, excellent sound system, smart controls, Bluetooth, and voice control. Additionally, there are small lights throughout the interior, such as:

• Footwell lights
• Ambient lights
• Vanity lights
• Small lights in the rear

However, the front armrest is too low, and the front compartment is quite cramped. There is only one USB port, and the rear trunk can only be opened from inside the car. It has rear parking sensors but lacks a camera. The panoramic roof only tilts and doesn’t open fully. Safety features are minimal—there's hardly any safety technology. You won’t find adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, collision warning, or blind-spot monitoring. Yes, these features are essential for families.

Driving Performance

One word: excellent. This car is incredibly fun to drive on the highway and in the city. The stability is fantastic, and I enjoyed tackling sharp turns. Its power is good, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds. The steering feel is remarkable, and once again, I was reminded of the Audi RS4. This is one of the most enjoyable hatchbacks I've driven. While its power cannot be compared to the Ford Focus ST or the Opel Astra OPC, it remains a thrilling ride. It comes with driving modes: Normal, Comfort, and Sport. I didn’t notice a significant difference between them. The suspension is good, but with such a steering feel, I expected the suspension to be firmer.

Conclusion

The Volkswagen Scirocco R is a fantastic driving experience with a few drawbacks. It is not the safest car nor the most spacious. Consider it if you are not married and enjoy driving.
