In a new move to tackle economic challenges, German automaker Volkswagen has announced its intention to sell its plant located in Nanjing, northwest of Shanghai. This announcement was made according to a report by the German economic newspaper "Wirtschafts Woche".
Reasons Behind the Sale Decision
The decision, according to sources within the company, stems from the need to adopt more efficient economic solutions. Sources also indicated that closing the plant is a possibility if the sale does not go through. It is worth noting that the plant, established in 2008 in collaboration with the Chinese partner SAIC, has an annual production capacity of 360,000 vehicles, including models such as the Volkswagen Passat, Skoda Kamiq, and Skoda Superb.
Underutilization of Production Capacity
Sources clarified that the primary reason for the decision is the underutilization of the plant's production capacity, as the current operational rates do not justify its continuation. Additionally, the relatively central location of the plant in Nanjing poses challenges in adapting operations to meet current needs.
Withdrawal from Other Locations
This is not the first time Volkswagen has taken similar steps in China. Last November, the company announced its withdrawal from its plant in Xinjiang province, which faced widespread criticism due to human rights violations against the Uyghur minority. The sale of the factory in Urumqi was also driven by similar economic reasons.
Future of Volkswagen Plants in China
According to the "Wirtschafts Woche" report, the decision to divest may include other factories within Volkswagen’s network of 26 plants in China. Insider sources indicated that facilities producing Skoda models could be on the list of plants at risk of sale, due to a sharp decline in sales for the brand.
Volkswagen is facing significant challenges in the Chinese market as it seeks to restructure its industrial strategies in line with changing demand and economic pressures. It remains to be seen how these steps will influence the company's future in the world's largest automotive market.
