Mercedes-AMG: The Pinnacle of Performance and Luxury
Introduction to Mercedes-AMG
Mercedes-Benz is one of the most successful automobile brands globally. This luxury marque, headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany, produces some of the most sought-after cars. For many motoring enthusiasts and affluent buyers, however, one name stands even above Mercedes-Benz: AMG. AMG is to Mercedes what the M Division is to BMW – both are tuning and performance specialists. With over two dozen Mercedes-Benz models available in the UAE, nearly every model has its own AMG high-performance variant.
The Origin of AMG
AMG was founded in 1967 by two former Mercedes-Benz engineers, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, in a small town near Stuttgart. The name "AMG" derives from the initials of the founders and Aufrecht's birthplace, Grossaspach. Initially named AMG Engine Production and Development Ltd., the name was later shortened to just AMG. Specializing in high-performance engine development for Mercedes-Benz cars, AMG entered motor racing with its newly developed 6.3-liter V8 engine, which was installed in the iconic 300 SEL 6.3 sedan. This marked the beginning of a successful partnership, culminating in Mercedes-Benz acquiring AMG in 1999.
Current Mercedes-AMG Models
Today, AMG operates from its headquarters in Affalterbach, Germany, offering 14 different Mercedes-AMG models worldwide. In the UAE, the most affordable AMG model is the A-Class based A 45 AMG, priced at nearly 250,000 dirhams. In contrast, the most expensive model is the S65 AMG Coupe, which costs an astounding 1.1 million dirhams.
Each AMG engine is still hand-built by a single engineer, ensuring an exclusive human touch that distinguishes AMG from other manufacturers. While Mercedes-Benz remains AMG's primary focus, the high standards and reliable engines also cater to prestigious clients like Aston Martin and Pagani Automobili. Moreover, AMG engines power several Formula One teams, with the safety car being a fully equipped Mercedes-AMG GT R.
Performance Highlights
The 2.0-liter turbocharged engine in the A 45 AMG is currently the world's most powerful four-cylinder engine, producing 381 hp and 475 Nm of torque. This allows the hot hatch to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds, with a top speed of 250 km/h. On the other end of the spectrum, the S63 AMG sedan, priced at 680,500 dirhams, features a remarkable 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 engine that delivers an impressive 604 hp and 900 Nm of torque. Despite its two-ton curb weight, this luxury vehicle can reach 100 km/h in a mere 3.5 seconds.
