2020 Lamborghini Sian FKP 37: A Hybrid Supercar Revolution

Lamborghini Sian

Lamborghini cars have always been about fantastic designs, powerful engines, an endearing soundtrack, and awe-inspiring performance. However, the affable Italian marque has never really been a huge fan of hybrid technology in supercars. They have never bothered to equip their loud, tire-scorching models with heavy battery packs, as optimum fuel consumption has never been their priority. While many of Lamborghini’s rivals have embraced hybrid offerings, it never seemed to bother the Bologna-based company. That, however, has changed now, thanks to one car that has been the talk of the town - welcome the all-new 2020 Lamborghini Sian FKP 37.

Overview of the Lamborghini Sian

Sian (in traditional Bolognese) translates to “thunderbolt”, which is a fitting name for a hybrid Lamborghini supercar. The ‘FKP 37’ suffix honors Ferdinand Piëch’s initials and his birth year of 1937. The Lamborghini Sian is an all-new product, essentially based on the Aventador SVJ’s architecture. While many cars in its class utilize traditional lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery packs for their hybrid strategy, Lamborghini has chosen the ‘supercapacitor’ path. Unlike bulkier Li-Ion packs, supercapacitor units weigh less but deliver significantly more power.

Exterior Design

One of the most vital factors for a Lamborghini to earn its distinction is its appearance. The 2020 Sian FKP 37 excels in this regard, knocking some of its competition right out of the park. This is undeniably a true Lamborghini, featuring body lines that are so sharp, they could cause injury if touched incorrectly. Much of the design draws inspiration from the venerable Countach, and the entire body is crafted from carbon fiber. The Sian’s captivating silhouette appears to be in motion, even when stationary.

  • Wedge-shaped front end with multiple cuts and angles for improved airflow
  • Carbon-fiber splitter and wing
  • Terzo Millennio Concept-inspired headlamps
  • Bold Y-shaped LED daytime running lights

The Sian’s sculpted sides, ultra-low stance, signature scissor doors, and huge wheels with center lug nuts enhance this supercar’s charm. The rear features Countach-inspired hexagonal tail lamps, an electronically-operated rear wing, active cooling vanes, and a massive air diffuser paired with twin, hexagonal exhausts.

Interior Features

In contrast to the flamboyant exterior, the interior of the 2020 Lamborghini Sian FKP 37 is relatively understated for a limited-run Lamborghini. However, it showcases some interesting features:

  • Placard displaying the serial number of the car
  • Wedge-shaped glass panel in the roof
  • Lamborghini-favorite hexagonal patterns with Y-shaped elements
  • Alcantara/leather/carbon-fiber trim
  • Digital instrument panel
  • Vertically-arranged infotainment display

Overall, this interior is a stunning place to be.

Engine and Performance

Now for the most critical aspect: power and performance. The Lamborghini Sian pairs a 6.5-liter V12 engine with a 48-volt electric motor, which is directly integrated into the Sian’s 7-speed Independent Shifting Rods (ISR) transmission. The entire system produces an impressive 807 hp and 720 Nm of torque, allowing the Lamborghini Sian to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under 2.8 seconds. This makes it the quickest-accelerating Lamborghini of all time. The Sian’s maximum velocity is electronically capped at 350 km/h, although it could likely exceed this limit. Despite being a hybrid, the Lamborghini Sian cannot operate on electric power alone for extended periods.

Conclusion

Lamborghini will only produce 63 examples of the Sian FKP 37, each of which has already been sold. Since purchasing is not an option, the Sian’s staggering $3.6 million price tag may not be a concern for most.
