The global launch of the 2017 Audi A5 took place in Porto, Portugal, allowing us to closely examine this new model. Undoubtedly, it presents a more robust appearance compared to its sibling, the Audi S5. Upon closer inspection of its exterior design, interior features, and performance, we discovered how this German vehicle competes with its rivals.
Exterior Design
The Audi A5 has always stood out for its design, establishing itself as a hallmark of German engineering. To maintain its status, designers have refined the body lines, enhancing its freshness and endowing it with a unique character and presence, making it akin to a work of art.
In contrast, the Audi S5 exudes more aggression and stature. With meticulous adjustments to the grille and front splitter, its features appear more intimidating and commanding. Larger wheels, side mirrors with silver accents, a prominent rear diffuser, and quad exhaust pipes all contribute to the S5's distinctive look.
Interior Design
Staying true to its predecessors, the 2017 Audi A5 has seen significant improvements in its interior design. By eliminating bulky air vents and a cluttered control unit, the new Audi model showcases a horizontal layout adorned with wood trim, supple leather, and chrome accents.
Featuring an elegantly designed steering wheel, aluminum pedals, and luxurious leather seats with S5 insignia, both models benefit from increased space due to expanded dimensions and a longer wheelbase.
Performance
At the heart of the Audi A5 lies a 2.0-liter TFSI engine that produces 252 horsepower, paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission. With 800 new components in the engine and a weight reduction of 60 kg (14 kg from the engine alone) compared to the previous model, the Audi A5 has made a significant leap forward.
For the Audi S5, the enhancements are equally impressive, featuring a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine that generates 354 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque—an increase of 21 horsepower over the previous model. With overall weight reduction and a drag coefficient of 0.25, the Audi A5 not only offers an exhilarating driving experience but also leads in aerodynamic efficiency.
