Mazda MX-5: The Iconic Two-Seater Roadster

Overview of the Mazda MX-5
The Mazda MX-5 is by far the most iconic two-seat coupe in the world. With over 1 million units sold since its production, the MX-5 has become the biggest-selling two-seater roadster globally. Who knew that this little car could become such a phenomenon?
Well, Mazda kept it simple with the following principles:
- 2 seats
- Rear-wheel drive
- Engine at the front
- Optional gearbox
The best part about the Mazda MX-5 is its affordability and fun driving experience. It wasn’t designed to achieve the fastest lap times or boast an overwhelming amount of horsepower. Instead, the Mazda MX-5 focuses on one thing – the drive. It is the most adored driver’s car among enthusiasts and regular drivers alike.

Latest Generation Mazda MX-5
The newest generation Mazda MX-5 was unveiled last year, and we are still eagerly waiting for it to arrive in this region. The new MX-5 features:
- Upgraded power
- Enhanced suspension
- A meaner look
- Increased size
The engine options for the MX-5 include:
- A 1.5-liter engine producing 130 BHP
- A 2.0-liter engine producing 158 BHP
These high-revving engines are paired with either a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. The MX-5 maintains its rear-wheel drive and front-engine layout. Most likely, only the 2.0-liter engine will debut in the GCC.

Mazda MX-5 RF: A New Variant
At the New York Auto Show, Mazda introduced another variant of the MX-5 called the MX-5 RF, where RF stands for Retractable Fastback. The MX-5 RF features:
- A targa top that can fold automatically
- Boot space similar to that of the roadster
This innovative roof design can open or close while the car is moving at speeds under 10 km/h. The RF will come with a special paint and is expected to hit the market by early 2017.
