A new wave of luxury midsize SUVs are coming in the market, with each model built with the aim of taking over this lucrative segment. In this matchup, we will feature the Volvo XC90, which had a full model revamp for 2016, and the Audi Q7, a model fresh from a full redesign in 2017. So, who wins between these 2 SUVs with car-like features?
Exterior
The Volvo XC90 has a very luxurious design, uncommon for a Volvo car but highly appropriate for the market it is targeting. Its exterior design is still very Volvo: function follows form. The Audi Q7, an all-new model, has the futuristic look we have come to know and love from the German auto maker. With sharper car-like styling, the Q7 is guaranteed to turn heads everywhere it goes. While the Volvo XC90 is very attractive, we give the edge on the exterior department to the Q7.

Interior
Typical of Volvo cars of old, the Volvo XC90 possesses a plush interior that prioritizes functionality over everything else. Both the front and rear seats offer generous space, though the third-row seats might be best reserved for smaller individuals. The XC90’s interior gains extra points for its high-quality materials and easy-to-use electronics. The Audi Q7 is no slouch in the interior department, as it comes with all the features and gizmos you come to expect from a high-end Audi. The front and rear seats are very comfortable and roomy, but the space where the boot and/or the third-row seats are located is minimal. The matchup is close, but we think the XC90 has the better interior overall.
Performance
While Volvo is not exactly known for building high-performance machines, they do make the effort to make the XC90 a fun-to-drive machine. Multiple engine options are available, from the T5 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine with a max of 245 horsepower to the 407-horsepower T8 engine that feature hybrid technology, a supercharger, and a turbocharger. Meanwhile, the Q7 only comes with two engine options: a 3.0-liter V6 engine with maximum output of 333 horsepower, and a smaller 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 252 horsepower.

Verdict
The Audi Q7 is a spectacular midsize SUV, a tough yet stylish machine that gets the job done. However, for this matchup, the Volvo XC90 wins thanks to its innovative styling, great interior, and superior performance.
