Named after the Tahoe Lake in the USA, the Chevrolet Tahoe made its debut appearance back in 1995. Just four years prior to the launch of the Tahoe, General Motors had introduced the GMC Yukon, which is almost identical to its Chevrolet twin. The Chevrolet Tahoe soon replaced the aging Blazer, and became the Bowtie’s latest full-size SUV. Eventually, the Tahoe became the brand’s best-selling SUV in America, and today, it is also one their highest sellers in the Middle East market.
The 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe represents the fourth generation of this large SUV, and has been given a comprehensive makeover over its predecessor. The 2019 Tahoe now boasts an updated exterior and interior design, upgraded technology and gadgets, and better power and efficiency. As one of Chevy’s most popular nameplates in the region, the 2019 Tahoe goes up against the likes of the Nissan Patrol, Toyota Land Cruiser, Dodge Durango, and Ford Explorer.
Exterior
The expansive exterior of the 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe is more old-school and traditional in its appeal with large, flat body panels and straight lines, especially when compared to some of its curvier competition. The Tahoe sure does look intimidating and has massive road presence, something that most ordinary crossovers cannot hold a candle to.
The front of the new Tahoe is dominated by a long and muscular hood, big chrome-laden grille with a center-mounted bowtie badge, large headlamps with chrome trimmings and sleek LED daytime-running lights, and a butch bumper with integrated corner-mounted foglamps. Its side reveals the conventional SUV silhouette with enlarged, squared-off wheel arches, pronounced fender flares, smaller glass area with almost vertical windows, and gargantuan but shiny 22-inch wheels. The blunt rear of the Tahoe has upright D-pillars, almost flat rear window, jutting roof-mounted spoiler with hidden rear wiper, large and vertically-arranged taillights, and a protruding bumper.
The 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe measures 5.181 meters in length, 2.044 meters in width, 1.890 meters in height, and has a wheelbase of 2.946 meters. With the third row folded, the Tahoe can easily transport 1,461 liters worth of cargo.
Interior
Given its mammoth exterior proportions, it isn’t a surprise to learn that the 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe is big on space. In its all-out configuration, the Tahoe can carry 9 people, though it is much better as a 7/8-seater. The large seats, ultra-wide center armrest, and chunky trim pieces further emphasize this SUV’s tough yet comfortable demeanor, alas for the traditional steering-mounted gear selector which feels pretty flimsy.
The new Tahoe’s cabin makes better and more use of decent quality materials such as plush leather and soft plastics. The build quality and fit and finish are quite good, and so is the compliance of the suspension. This, along with the supportive seats, the Tahoe is a great mile-muncher. Features are aplenty, including adaptive cruise control, adaptive HID headlights, adaptive dampers, electric sunroof, powered side steps, electric tailgate, multi-zone A/C, leather seats with heating and cooling, electric second and third row seats, and an 8-inch infotainment system with navigation. The Tahoe also gets a battery of airbags and numerous electronic gizmos for safety and peace of mind.
Engine and performance
The 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe gets a 5.3-liter V8 that produces 355 HP and 383 Nm of torque. A standard 6-speed autobox either transfers propulsion to the rear (in 2WD variants) or all four wheels. The +2.5-ton Tahoe is capable of reaching 100 km/h in 9 and bit seconds, a top speed of 172 km/h, and could return 12.3L/100 km.
