Cadillac XT5: A Comprehensive Overview of the Updated Mid-Sized Crossover

Just recently, Cadillac launched its mid-sized crossover in the UAE, the XT5. This model sits above the XT4 in the brand’s portfolio and competes with vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5, and BMW X3. Now, Cadillac has decided to give it an update to make it look scintillating and head-turning. Usually, a facelift brings with it subtle cosmetic changes, but a lot has changed, especially in the engine department of the XT5 with this evolution.

The changes aren’t instantly recognizable at first sight. However, a deeper look will reveal:

  • A larger matte-black grille with chrome surrounds.
  • Mildly tweaked headlamps with revised strips of LEDs.
  • Signature design characteristics include a hood bulging at the center and a compact bumper with air intakes.

The portly fenders, a flowing crease, and a high shoulder line contribute to a macho look from the side. However, the substantial overhangs appear disproportionate for such a car.

The rear visage is inspired by the smaller XT4 crossover, featuring a similar set of curved taillights and a bulky boot. Some aluminum finishes and black cladding on the bumper provide a nice touch to the car.

Interior

The cabin layout of the XT5 offers an extremely futuristic approach with swooping lines and minimal buttons on the dashboard. Unlike its rivals, the XT5 still utilizes a conventional analog outline for the instrument cluster, complemented by a small digital screen providing information about cruise control and the fuel meter.

Notable features include:

  • A multi-function steering wheel with embedded buttons for ease of functionality.
  • An 8” CUE touchscreen infotainment system from the XT4, which is expected to be more responsive and includes a reverse parking camera and phone connectivity.
  • Heated front seats, LED headlights, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, automatic braking with pedestrian detection, and a safety buzzer that vibrates the seats to alert the driver of nearby objects.

As expected for a car positioned in the premium compact SUV segment, there’s an abundance of leather used in the XT5, providing an upmarket feel. The BMW-inspired gear selector is a welcomed addition.

Engine and Performance

A surprising highlight is the incorporation of a turbocharged engine. The base models are anticipated to be powered by a 2-liter turbo engine producing 237 hp and 350 Nm of torque, while the larger 3.6-liter V6 is expected to deliver 310 horses and 370 Nm of torque. These figures will likely be paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

To enhance fuel efficiency, the 2-liter model is likely to feature an electrically assisted power braking system, Cadillac’s system for regenerative braking, designed to prevent abrupt power cutdown. This represents one of the brand's significant efforts towards efficiency.

Verdict

The Cadillac XT5 marks a substantial improvement over its predecessor, the SRX. This update brings the XT5 closer to its rivals with a better appearance, an elegant interior, enhanced features, and improved functionality. The possibility of a 2-liter turbo engine suggests good efficiency. While it may not set benchmarks in specific categories, it combines various strengths into a package that is likely much more affordable than its competitors. Although it may not possess a prestigious brand value, the XT5 stands as a compelling alternative to its rivals and should not be overlooked.
