Part of our trip to Spain for the launch of the 2017 Nissan Navara included an exciting and truly memorable trip to the manufacturer’s Barcelona plant. As home of Nissan’s European Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) Business Unit, Nissan’s Spanish Operations comprise of four different plants which are an integral part of the company’s presence in Europe.

While the Barcelona plant has two different lines where passenger and commercial vehicles are produced, the plant is in complete sync with the brand’s St Andrew’s plant as that is where frames for the vehicles are produced. On the other hand, the Cantabria plant is used for the alliance with Renault and the Avila plant only manufactures trucks.

Models produced at the Barcelona plant include the NP300 Navara, the Pulsar, the NV200 and the eNV200. Between the Barcelona and Avila plant, a whopping 101,025 vehicles were manufactured in 2015, with 2016 estimates up at 140,000 units.

With the Barcelona plant winning a quality award in 2013 and a Nissan Global Quality Award in 2014, it is the only plant outside of Japan that can export cars to Japan itself. A breakdown of the costs at the Barcelona plant are 8%, 17%, 75% between manpower, logistics, and materials respectively.

Frank Torres, Managing Director at Nissan Motors Ibérica said, “It’s incredibly important to me to ensure that the Barcelona Plant is able to remain competitive because this opens up new production opportunities which have a knock-on effect on the number of people we can employ. In the coming years, the Barcelona Plant will work at full capacity, with an annual output of over 200,000 units while maintaining its attractiveness to produce new models. Given the recent crisis environment, this is not only a great achievement for Nissan, but for the entire industry in this country."

Key Statistics - Barcelona Plant:
Workers: 3,830
Investment since 2007: €691 million
Exports: 94% of output to 96 markets
