Anticipated Changes for the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro
Introduction
Winds of change are blowing with the passage of time. This phrase, drawn from a famous song by the Scorpions, was sung just before the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany. I find this expression aptly reflects what we can expect from the next generation of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro (Camaro Prices and Specifications).
History of the Chevrolet Camaro
The Chevrolet Camaro, much like the Chevrolet Corvette (Corvette Prices and Specifications), is an iconic vehicle in the automotive world. The current generation represents the fifth iteration of the Camaro, while the sixth generation is expected to be unveiled on May 16. So, what changes can we anticipate?
Driving Experience of the Chevrolet Camaro
We would like to remind you that we have previously test-driven the 2015 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. To understand the details of the changes, we need to experience the new model firsthand.
New Platform
Let's start with the platform, as the choice of platform influences many other details. The next generation of the Chevrolet Camaro has transitioned from the Zeta platform, developed in 2006 and used in vehicles like the Caprice, to the Alpha platform, which was developed in 2012 and is utilized by Cadillac models such as the ATS and CTS.
Weight and Performance Changes
The adoption of the Alpha platform for the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro means that the next generation will be approximately 200 kg lighter. This could also mean that it will be the first Camaro in history equipped with a turbo engine. We are witnessing a gradual shift in American automotive thinking towards smaller, turbocharged engines.
Engine Sound
Chevrolet teased us with a leaked video showcasing the sound of the 2016 Camaro's engine, hinting that it will feature a six-cylinder engine. The sound in the video suggests that it may be a twin-turbo engine. Given that it's a six-cylinder, we expect the engine we hear to be the same 3.6-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder currently used in the Cadillac CTS VSport, which produces 420 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque.
Engine Options
I don't believe the base model of the Camaro will be equipped with this engine, “though that would be fantastic.” However, I think General Motors will provide the base model with the excellent 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine that generates around 300 horsepower.
Regardless of what General Motors chooses for the engines, even if they retain the same engine options as before, shedding 200 kg of weight will give the car a sportier feel and improved performance. Yes, the winds of change are blowing with the passage of time.
