Introduction
Careem has unveiled its new team of female captains on the same historic day that marked the lifting of the ban on women driving in Saudi Arabia.
Details of the New Service
Starting today, women, referred to as captains, will begin working with Careem to continue the company's mission of enhancing and simplifying the lives of people in the region.
The service will initially launch in the three major cities: Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam, with plans to expand to all cities shortly thereafter.

Mudathir Sheikha, the CEO of Careem, stated after this announcement: "We are pleased to welcome pioneering women who will make a real addition to the Careem team. Careem plans to focus on recruiting women to register on the platform in 2018, in light of our commitment to creating promising and fruitful job opportunities in the Middle East."
It is noteworthy that Careem creates between 60,000 to 70,000 new job opportunities each month in all cities where it operates. Mudathir Sheikha added: "Our long-term goal is to register 20,000 women across the region by 2020."
Careem's Motivations Behind the Service
This initiative comes in response to Careem's recognition that the ride-hailing industry has overlooked women's opportunities to earn additional income through our platform until now. This response highlighted the urgent need to invest our time and focus in understanding and analyzing this issue.
Additionally, Careem launched the Captains Committee this year, tasked with addressing this issue and formulating a better understanding of the barriers that may deter women from working with us, as well as understanding what is needed to create a supportive environment where they can thrive.
Statistics and Impact
According to statistics, 70% of Careem's users in the Kingdom are women. Careem has been a significant ally for women seeking a safe and reliable mode of transportation even before the service launched in Saudi Arabia. Today, Careem has made a real breakthrough in the delivery sector in the Kingdom by enabling women to travel from one place to another without needing a male relative to drive them.
