Introduction

Front-end and rear-end collisions are among the most common types of accidents. These incidents often occur due to drivers failing to maintain a sufficient distance from the vehicle in front of them. When the leading car brakes suddenly, the following driver may not have enough time to react, leading to a collision.

The Importance of Safe Distance

Traffic authorities around the world emphasize the significance of maintaining a safe distance through:

  • Conducting seminars.
  • Issuing informative publications.
  • Enforcing fines in certain cases.

Other Causes of Accidents

However, safe distance is not the only factor contributing to these collisions. Lack of focus and attention can also lead to such incidents. To alert drivers, collision warning technology has been developed.

How Does Front-End Collision Warning Technology Work?

This technology alerts the driver when they are too close to the vehicle ahead by:

  • Issuing an audible warning.
  • Providing a warning three seconds prior to a potential collision.

How the System Operates

The front-end collision warning system detects the possibility of a collision by analyzing:

  • The speed of the vehicle.
  • The relative speed.
  • The relative acceleration compared to the vehicle in front.

These elements are measured using:

  • The vehicle's display.
  • Waves emitted from radar or sensors.

Scenarios Considered by the Technology

The technology takes into account three potential scenarios:

  1. If the front object is stationary: The system measures the constant speed and decreasing distance, providing an alert up to three seconds before a collision.
  2. If there is a vehicle in front that is braking: The system detects the brake lights of the leading vehicle and gives an alert up to seven seconds before a potential collision.
  3. If the driver is already braking: The alert is delayed since the driver is actively applying the brakes.
