Introduction
As the adoption of autonomous vehicles increases on the streets of the United Arab Emirates, the Dubai Electronic Security Center (DESC) is set to launch the region's first cybersecurity standards for self-driving cars. These guidelines will provide security instructions that various Dubai government departments will implement for autonomous vehicles.
Future Plans
With a goal of converting 25% of all transportation in Dubai to autonomous means by 2030, DESC is dedicated to developing and implementing policies that safeguard the electronic control landscape of the emirate. Dubai is renowned as the safest city in terms of cybersecurity, known for its openness to global innovations, which has encouraged it to allocate spaces for innovative ideas, similar to the approach taken by Singapore.
Official Statements
According to DESC Director General Yousef Al Shaibani: "The company has diligently collaborated with its partners to establish best practices and standards to empower and secure these modern technologies against any challenges. We can seamlessly transition to an era where human intervention is unnecessary, allowing for autonomous vehicles to travel hundreds of kilometers without disruption."
Standards and Guidelines
The new standards and guidelines cover various aspects, including:
- Failure cases in previous versions of autonomous vehicles.
- Security of communication between vehicles.
- Security of vehicle programming and equipment.
