Effective Methods for Repairing Car Headlights

Car Headlights

Introduction

Many people do not pay much attention to the condition of their car headlights. For them, as long as they illuminate, that is sufficient. This mindset is flawed in many cases, as several factors can affect the brightness of car headlights, with oxidation being one of the most significant causes.

What is Oxidation?

Oxidation is a process that affects headlights, causing the lenses to become cloudy due to a slow chemical reaction over many years. This process creates an uneven layer on the lights, potentially reducing the light that passes through the lens by nearly 50%. It can also scatter the light emitted from the bulb, meaning the beams from the headlights will not be straight, which is certainly undesirable.

Methods for Repairing Oxidation

Fortunately, there are several ways to address this issue. The three best-known methods are:

  • Using glass cleaners
  • Headlight restoration kits
  • Toothpaste method

1. Using Glass Cleaners

Step 1: Clean the glass with a standard glass cleaner.

Step 2: After cleaning the lenses with the glass cleaner, dry them and then apply a clear coat for cars or plastic. Be careful not to get the paint on any rubber parts, and avoid painting in direct sunlight.

Step 3: Polish by hand or with a towel. This will help protect the headlights.

2. Headlight Restoration Kit

Step 1: Purchase a headlight restoration kit. Ensure that the kit includes sandpaper, adhesive tape, and lens polish.

Step 2: Use the adhesive tape around the lens edges to avoid polishing any other parts, as lens cleaner may damage the car's paint.

Step 3: The worse your headlights are, the coarser the sandpaper you will need. If your headlights are not too bad, 500 grit sandpaper will suffice; however, if they are severely oxidized, you may need 2500 grit sandpaper.

Step 4: Remove the oxidation. Use the sandpaper in a side-to-side motion until the oxidation is gone. Keep the headlights wet during the process.

Step 5: Apply a protective wax once the lens is clean. Always start from the top.

Step 6: Remove the adhesive tape, and your headlights will look like new!

3. Toothpaste Method

Step 1: Apply some toothpaste to a sponge and scrub the headlights vigorously for a few minutes.

Step 2: Rinse off the toothpaste and use car wax. Wait for it to dry, then rinse the headlights again. You will have incredibly clean headlights!
